MY BETA IS UP

http://planetmyhill.com/Project_Liquid_ ... iquidA.wmv

I know it looks kinda shit right now, but I'm just trying to get that sence of progresion into a complete beta, then I'l start to worry about the sync. Anyway, I'd love to hear any criticism people have.

Oh and on something unrelated, I just got accepted into a cource for network engineering (Which I was almost sure I would'nt get into, considering my less than impresive school marks). Thank god, Im so relieved.

CD AQUIRED

Guess who got their grubbly little hands on a LTE CD? Yup, I finally found a copy so I will be cutting up the sections and sending you the WAVs. I think this will be the easiest way, the whole WAV will probly take up a ton of HDD space. Before I send them I'll try to reassemble them, just to make sure I can do it accuratly.

BUM

Before I get into the specifics, let me make a few general comments. First I am very impressed with your layout. The theory behind this project is to move the viewer along a narritive line while following the ebb abd flow of the music. Dispite it's short length your beta does this masterfully. each scene flows logically into the next without any confusion (false assumptions maybe, but no confusion.) The beggining is the wakest part but from there it flows smothly from one part to the next. A quick flash of some kind of creature some drawings. The danger sign and the grate (This may be one of my favorite parts, it's only small detail but you can almost feel the movement underground.) Then yous see two figures, dressed in lab coats, experimenters of a sort. Then the creature is introduced. The buttons are pressed (key scene) and the experiment begins, but something goes wrong. I assume the boy is involved in the experiment, you don't show it but it can be seen in the greif he feels at the death of the technician. That was also masterfull, to show the death and then the hand in the aftermath gives the video an internal consistancy that makes the series unnecicary. The guilt at the nameless technisians death is supprisingly moving. I find myself incredably anxios to see what happened, but I'm not concered with what happened to the creature, I'm worried about the boy (emotionally speaking.) This might be an exelent direction to take it in, but I'm sure you have plans of your own and after seeing what you have so far I am inclined to trust your instincts.

Excelent job.

(I'll give some detailed timing type things in a bit, my new CD awaits.)

bum: finally I have a chance to post comments!

Overall, I was really impressed with your mood synching. You definitely caught the sense of urgency early on in this piece. I think it would be nice if you showed more interactions between two main characters, just to flesh them out more and reveal their relationship to the audience (right now, they don't really seem to be intimate).

There are some notes/beats that I wished you could've synched to. I list the times below, although some of the timing may be iffy because you made so many quick cuts:

0:03 - the two low notes near the end of this second.
0:13 - the same two low notes as above
0:29 - I really like the music synching at 0:25 and was wondering if you could do something similar here
0:34 - there are some pretty prominent beats here

Here are the parts that I liked:

0:07 to 0:10 - the motion here is really slick, unlike all the choppy cuts around it.

0:22 to 0:24 - I like that you didn't oversynch the motion of the robot(thing) with the music. The motion, again, is nice and smooth.

0:25 - catches the beat pretty well.

0:26 to 0:29 - same as before. The slowly expanding motion of the monster-thing (what IS it called?) makes an ominous combination with the music.

0:35 to 0:41 - a moment of silent mourning is interrupted by a deadly explosion. Very tragic. Actually I just like the explosion because it suited the music pretty well, without being choppy.

You might have guessed by now that I really like smooth motion. :P My belief is that skillfully-synched smooth motion can be pretty effective in action videos. I think that in the first part of your beta, where just about every note has a cut, some more continuous scenes could make the section less bewildering. Choppy pans (of one continuous shot) could be more effective than quick juxtapositions of different shots.

But then... maybe you're going for a wind-up of tension? Well, whatever you do, this seems to be heading in a nice direction. I look forward to the next beta!

Pen-pen: can't wait for the audio! How are you getting them out to us?

How's the rest of the CD? I looked for it again at Tower Records in December, but their only copy of it had a huge crack on the case... and was selling for even more than the list price on Amazon! :?

___________

The next two weeks don't look too ripe in terms of editing for me, due to the second round of semester finals. We'll see what happens...

The CD is awesome! 70 minute of Prog Rock goodness. It's the kind of CD where there aren't a lot of distictions between the tracks, one flows right into the next and you can (and I do) listen to the peice as a single composistion with fast sections, slow sections, and more rifs than you could count. The best way I can describe it is as a never ending current, always changing but never stopping.

I'm thinking of using the first track (or so) for my first forray into action videos next time I get the chance.

Another cool note. The departure of Jhon Perduchi when his wife went into labor (which is how they got the name) is marked by that baby sound at 13:00 something. The rest of the peice was composed by the three remaining members.

In addition to making the high quality audio I might make some mp3's for the other tracks on the CD so you guys can hear it if you want.

As for distribution, I'll fire up the old server here on my desktop and if people have problems with that I'll ask one of the projeck members to host the files.

I'm gonna need the wav, mp3, whatever of my track before I can really get into editing. Yes, I can cut the segment from the mp3 I have but no, that might not be dead on where the final cuts get made, thus throwing my video a partial frame off-track which could be disasterous for as tight of editing this segment demands (or I think it demands). I'd rather do it right the first time than go back through every effect and cut and shift them back or forward one frame (if it's that easy, cuts near natural cuts in the animation will really take cajoling).
Life's short.
