Now this series that's coming April 3rd is called Simoun. The synopsis from Animenfois here:

The story takes place on a planet different from the Earth. They call their planet the Great Air Continent. There, they are born as female. When they become 15 years old, they go to the "spring" and choose their sex to become "adult".

They are at war; the country where the main characters live is invaded by the next country aiming at their superior engine. Day by day, the situation is getting severer. To intercept their attack, they convert the two-seater plane for ceremony, Simoun, into a fighter. Also, they organize an air squad, "Call", which consists of "Mediums". They are girls who don’t decide their sex yet.

The girl who can operate "Simoun" is called "Simoun Siwula". Because they have special abilities, they can choose when they become “adult” by themselves. However, since the war broke out, they've been forced to continue to be pilots, i.e., "girls".

Well episode 1 has been released! Hmmm, the concept of the girls kissing each other in order to power up their aircraft is actually not a bad one.

Though I have to say that this series uses 3DCG a lot especially on the aircraft which I found to be very unique. Luckily, there aren't many scenes where the 3DCGs were within Studio DEEN's 2D work or else it would of clashed quite badly. The result is actually a decent blending of the mediums. The overall enviroment looks really gorgeous, and it has almost of a pastel feeling towards it. The background music mostly consists of classical instrumentals though once a battle scene starts, the music switches to a Latin tango mix. It surprisingly fits the atmosphere.

For me the character designs of the girls took a bit of time to get use to, but I found them in the end rather cute. The potential of the story is certainly there since quite of bit was happening in the first (which to a point I need to rewatch it again considering a few amount of jargon was thrown around). This actually might become good stuff.

This series has been licensed by Media Blasters, and during AX it has been confirmed to be sub-only. With that in mind, I'm pretty reluctant on following the fansubs. Nonetheless I've check out episodes 2 to 5 which furthers my curiosity of the settings. Like for example there are guys as well as girls but EVERYONE is voiced by a female seiyuu which is kind of freaky especially ones that looks like your typical old guy.

But c'mon, you can't beat girl-on-girl kissing powered aircraft!

All right, people has been saying that around Episode 8 that's where the plot will drastically pick up, and I have to say it really did! It's one heck of a bang!

On another note, Media Blasters is going to release the 1st volume DVD on 11/13 with the first six episodes! Now considering it's going to be sub-only, I bet the retail price will be $19.99 (if it's available in Best Buy, I can get it at $14.95) which is going to be one helluva steal!

Hehehe, more character development and interactions in their new ship is always fun. Especially in episode 12 there's a hot implied sister incest action!

The lighting was perfect!
