Re: Angel Beats!
Contrived episode 10... LOLZ. Talk about zero emotional impact.
The funniest thing about this show is the first character to disappear was the most emotionally well directed and meaningful. That's not a good thing when said character was minimally developed and the audience has minimal attachment to character. We're now quite a few more episodes in and that character still stands out as better developed than the recent ones.
I was going to mention this earlier but there's a lot of VN roots in some of the characterization and story. That makes sense because Maeda is writing it but I think they went back to well too many times. Even the "let's save them" angle was reminding me somewhat of Tanaka Romeo's Cross Channel. I think the brevity of the series is a wall for Maeda. Definitely a constraint he's probably not used to. As a VN writer he has certainly been slow to do things and his scenarios ballooned in later works (see Clannad). The problem here is now he has a constraint but instead of picking something to focus on he's all over the place. As is often the case in the anime industry some of this could very be coming from producers needs to have certain desirable elements in the show.

Re: Angel Beats!
Angel Beats is totally a bad anime, but that's not the point. It's a bad anime that knows it's a bad anime, and manages to keep its foibles, contrivances and silliness entertaining, at least for me. There's relatively little pretension about it, and it just does what it needs to do, while also passing off a few cool ideas and characters here and there. It's not trying very hard, but it's still keeping things fresh for me, and I know it's not gonna go on long enough to really kill off any sense of freshness it may have. I'll take Angel Beats any day over many other anime that are bad in much the same way, but pretend not to know it and try to pass off as some sort of masterpiece.
tl;dr version: if you're watching Angel Beats expecting it to be good, you're doing it wrong
And yes, brotonashi :manlytears:

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Re: Angel Beats!
So yeah, I think that's one of the things that keeps me enjoying this show. The "revelations" are a bit overblown and contrived, but they STILL caught me off guard. This generates "OH FUCK WHAT" moments. By this formula, Angel Beats is better than Avatar. :>
