Okay, as a DBZ "purist" let's set the record straight.
If you are ONLY watching the English dub, you aren't watching DragonBall Z. That's the bottomline, sorry, you AREN'T watching DBZ. So please leave your opinions at the door, it's annoying as hell to those of us who do bother to see the real anime. The real anime is in the original Japanese, and ONLY in the original Japanese.
It's completely different in Japanese. Sometimes, whole story lines and dialogue are completey different. The music is completely different. Song numbers were cut out (like the song when Gohan goes SSJ2). Whole or sometimes half episodes are cut out (like Furiza torturing Kurinin on his horns while blood is flying everywhere). That's why there are more episodes in the Japanese, than the English. If you are judging DBZ based on what you have watched on Cartoon Network, you might as well judge War and Peace based on Reader's Digest. It's just that simple.
The reason it was called Dragonball Z in the anime is just to differ from the Dragonball series. It was a Toei decision to break the Toriyama manga into two series. It was ONLY called Dragonball in the Manga (pronouced MAYN - GA). That was a decision of Toei (Bird), and doesn't have a lot to do with Akira Toriyama.
You are juding the animators at Toei not Akira Toriyama. Some of the animation is (agreed) just lousy, some is not. Akira Toriyama had NOTHING to do with those decisions, he only drew the manga. In fact, when the character Vegeta was introduced, (in the filler episode the English dub called, "Trouble on Arlia") the colors that Toei animaters gave him were so off, Toriyama contacted them to set them straight. The boots are white. Saiya-jin all have black hair. (and so forth).
As for the later Dragonball Series. Akira Toriyama's original intention was to end the entire Dragonball series on Namek with Vegeta dying, Goku dying in his fight to kill Furiza, and Gohan returning to Earth in a bittersweet ending, as the last Saiya-jin.
Toei BEGGED him not to. He finally agreed, and took time to think of a new plot line, which started the Trunks Saga, Artificial Human Saga, and finally the Cell Saga. The time he took thinking up this Saga, also explains the Garlic Jr. Saga. Toei had to fill up the time between the Namek/Furiza Saga, and the launch of the Trunks Saga.
Some people hate the later DBZ as compared to the earlier DBZ. Agreed by the Majin Buu Saga, the SSJ 2s, 3s, and 4s (Oh, yeah that was GT

), got to the point of being silly. (I, myself, love the Trunks/Android/Cell Saga)
BUT IT'S DRAGONBALL PEOPLE!

It was written/drawn by Akirya Toriyama who's best known for gag comics like Dr. Slump. WHAT DID YOU EXPECT? You want heavy groundbreaking drama, go rent Akira.
THIS IS DRAGONBALL. It's supposed to be humorous and silly sometimes. Look at the names of the characters for pity sake (I mean the REAL names of the characters and not the English dub, and their real translations)
Chi Chi = breasts (a baby name for breasts or breast milk)
Kurinin = chestnut
Bejita = play on Vegetable
Kakarotto = carrot
If you can't appreciate that, you are watching the wrong anime. Take your grouchiness somewhere else and leave us people who can appreciate it, to do so without your whining.
Especially, blaming Toriyama who had nothing to do with the anime, asside from letting Toei talk him into continuing the manga. It would be like blaming Tolkein for Peter Jackson so botching up "The Two Towers." All Tolkein did was sell the rights to his book. That's all Toriyama did, was sell the rights. It's a financial decision. How do you think most books get made into movies?

Also, the only time this show was good, was when it was DragonBall. Dragonball was cute and funny. All of them were short and round. But then, Akira Toriyama, the man with probably the worst art style ever, decided he wanted to keep it going. So he made DBZ. He was much to lazy to create new characters, so he used the same ones from his previous show. Causing the whole story to MAKE NO SENSE. There weren't aliens in Dragon Ball. It wa a cute little fantasy, filled with chubby boys with tails and dinosaurs. Then he makes it a Sci-Fi and it turns retarded.
DBZ is a bunch of grunting because they can't put in the excessive swearing. There is a green child molestor and Vegeta. Vegeta...I can't even tell you how much he makes me want to kill the creator.
Funimation doesn't have such bad voices though. Justin Cook, the line director for Yu Yu Hakusho and DBZ, also voices of Dende and Yusuke, is the coolest. Sean Teag, who I don't even remember him being in DBZ, works with Funimation, and he rocks. I also like Christopher Sabat, no matter how horribly retarded his voices for his characters sound.
What I'm saying is, I'm not blaming the dubbers for the horribleness of DBZ. This time, it's the creators fault. I shun Akira Toriyama. Shun him.
