Well, early on in the episode, Negi realizes that Asuna's sudden death couldn't have been natural, and must have been a demon's magic. While searching for a way to find out more, Takahata sees what he is doing and knocks him out to keep him from getting involved with demon magic. When Negi wakes up, he sneaks away, and stumbles accross the science club girls. They tell him that they know he can use magic, and that they have a machine that they think would help him find out what happened to Asuna.
In the lab, they show him that they've built a time machine. If he could charge it with magical energy, it might be able to tak ehim back in time so he can try to find out what happened to Asuna.
The time machine, however, messes up. While Negi si charging it, all the other students (Who'd been looking for him) run in just as the time machine overloads, and they are all caught in the time warp.
They all end up in Germany, 9 years in the past. All of them are together, except Negi, who ends up in a forest with none other than Asuna, 9 years younger. However, the biggest shock is that she's living in the wilderness with her guardian, who is none other than Nagi Springfield, Negi's father, the famous Thousand Master.
The thousand master tells Negi that he is protecting Asuna because she's cursed. She has some sort of magical power, which he hasn't figured out yet, which attracted a demon to her. The demon spared her life and saved her from the burning house she was in, but in exchange for her soul. The demon gave her ten years to live, and one year had passed already according to Nagi, so she only had 9 years left to live.
The next morning, Negi makes breakfast for them. Nagi is impressed, and Negi goes to get water from the stream. While Negi is gone, a demon appears to attack Nagi. Nagi activates his magic shield, and Asuna comes running out to him. The shield dissapears, and the demon drives a sword through Nagi's chest.
"I see... Magic cancel!" Nagi said, realizing what Asuna's power was. He then told her to not worry, and that he'd be back someday. Then he made himself and the demon dissapear into a black hole of some sort. He thought to himself "Negi... Take care of Asuna!"
