Are the finalists simply those that get the most nominations in each category or does the org do some additional screening to select the best contenders?

As far as I know, it's just a tally of the top 5 vids in each category (maybe more than 5) - according to how many nominations each vid gets in each category. So a vid with 60 nominations for Best Action will go to the finals while one with 3 nominations for that category won't.
I suppose if there's a tie 6 or more vids may make it to the finals, but I believe the desired number is 5 each.

I must have missed rule #14:
"There will be a round of video nominations for each category. The top videos (usually 5) to receive the most nominations for each category will be eligible for the award for that category. A video may be for nominated zero or more categories."
Sorry!

Is there anywhere that tells the creator of the video how many nominations they have personally recieved?

Not at the moment, but it would be interesting to see the stats after the nominations are complete.
