Beautiful Lies [Violet Evergarden]

Post by FoxJones » Mon Aug 27, 2018 9:15 am

Hello hello...

I know there must already be a fuckton of Violet Evergarden AMVs out there, but this combination with Beyond the Black's song "Beautiful Lies" just had to be made. So... I made this. I can't even remember when was the last time I made a serious character profile AMV.

Finished this one already a good month ago, but had to wait out the release because of Tracon's AMV-contest rules. Now that I know I didn't get this one into the final, I can show it to you! (My other horrible video did get into the final showing. That one will be released next month after the convention)

The flow and mood of the video was pretty nice. I do feel that the pace of your cuts and plot progression was a bit slow though (especially when the emotions of the song reaches its peak).

Hey it's the Fox and he's alive!

This was a solid video and it's too bad it didn't make it into the finals at Tracon. I'm looking forward to the contest video, too, I seem to enjoy the videos you deem horrible yourself. :D

This felt professional and it held my attention from beginning to end.

Interesting AMV. I thought your cuts were clean and you did a good job matching the beat in certain sections with your subtle camera effects. The scenes towards the end felt a bit dull compared to the start, which is odd since the song seemed to increase in intensity but the scenes did not. For example, starting at 2:57 and onward I felt the scenes could have been more interesting and intense, but most were just shots of characters with slow camera pans. Other than that, great work.

You both bring up a valid point and it's a good thing you noticed this, since taking this approach was absolutely intentional!
You both mention the change in the song towards the end, and while you say it changes in intensity, I think most importantly there is a change of tone and mood, and that was what I wanted to bring out more. Especially around the 3:15 I feel there is a much more positive and even a bit hopeful tone than before, and wanted to emphasize that with the scene selections. In this retelling of the original storyline the main character (Violet) has kind of reached the rock bottom and now starts to climb up again and realises to look forward. Reason why I wanted to avoid going overboard with editing, at the late part of this video, was that I was afraid the message I wanted to send out would drown under all the visual fluff.
So.. I agree that this approach took out a portion of intensity.. but I'd hardly call it less interesting!

Oh boy do I have a treat for you then! :D

I'm really glad to hear that, thank you!
