. umm . you've sorta "hit" a subject that is driving me insane here, for I am
also looking for a better Capture Card that the ATI line of products.
Todays standands are APG types that capture MPEG-2 video's at 720 X 480
picture resolution, but I want a higher "Capture Setting for Picture Size."
. http://www.videoguys.com/convertx.html is a perfect example of where things
are heading - in theory, the "box" does it all for you - but not in this design!
. When someone can capture Video at 2600 X 1800 I'll be impressed!
until then, remember that Capture Cards are currently not great display cards.

ATI products ALL-IN-WONDER line started with 8 and 16 meg versions;
however, the built-in Codec for capturing "AVI"s was flawed!
If you are going to go cheap-cheep, then possibly "Radion 7200" might
work best - at least it does MPEG-2 and has the newer Codec.
btw, the TV Tuner ones are not any different than the Capture Cards only.

Try checking this page, there are several listed. The plextor will capture directly to divx or mpeg4.

You might want to take a look at ATI's TV Wonder series. They are PCI capture cards/tuners. I bought a TV Wonder VE for under $40 2 years ago and the TV Wonder Pros are less than $70 I believe. My TV Wonder VE has worked fine for me, but I bet it isn't the best. Sometimes installing drivers is a pain and some peoples computers won't accept it at all. My advice is the ATI TV Wonder series is a good cheap alternative, but you have to be lucky for it work in your system and make sure you install the right drivers. Since I haven't used any other capture cards I can't really fully recommend it.
So try the ATI is you feel lucky or go with Pinnacle. I tried a Pinnacle Studio AV over a year ago, but I had driver problems with Windows XP. I would suppose the driver issues are resolved and Castor Troy liked Pinnacle from the sound of it. Kind of a long winded recommendation eh? Right now, I say Pinnacle is your best bet for a good quality card at a decent price.
