Ahem.

glibc has been ported too. Basically a GNU/Linux machine will run on an Athlon 64 (or an Opteron; note that they aren't the same thing) _now_.

That's support enough for me. Fuck Windows :P

There do exist motherboards for the Athlon 64 -- you can Google and you'll find a bunch of 'em. (You think chip companies release CPUs without designs supporting hardware?)

Other points:

- If you don't do any stuff at the bit-twiddling level then making things work for a 64-bit architecture is a C library and compiler change away.
- If you do, then you should have made your code flexible enough to change from 32-bit to 64-bit dependency with a few macros (or whatever).

post-it:
Your argument why 64-bit processors are "inadaquate now" makes no sense...

Yeah Trythil brought up another point...which I didn't read.

No MB support? Are you out of your mind?!?!

Why would we launch a processor without any motherboards? We obviously work with our partners so that all of us can launch at the same time.

VIA, nVidia, Asus and probably Gigabye all have Motherboards out right now.

Oh and Trythil is right, Linux has supported our 64-bit platform for awhile...

Hmm athlon64 chips eh? How do they stack up against Apple's G5? Their 64 bit processors came out in august.

Apple tests show that the G5's are much better than anything on the market, and anything that will ever be produced in the future, and God.

Here is the extent of their information on it performance

Yeah too bad our Opteron's (also 64-bit) came out in April and then there's Alpha that did it YEARS ago.

How do they stack up? Would you like the truth or that of Steve Jobs? Grr I wish I could find theinquirer comic that made fun of jobs and his reality distortion bubble :).

Basically Apple did their own benchmarks with everything pretty much disabled on the x86 end (intel and AMD) and it won. Non-industry people did benchmarks and the G5 got stomped by CURRENT x86 technology (i.e. non 64-bit Athlons or Prescots...just normal P4 and Athlons).

Now that there are these new chips coming out, I'd imagine the G5 sucks even more. Call me an Apple basher, but they've been behind the performance times for years. Given, their G5 did close the gap, but now with Athlon 64's and Prescots, it'll just increase again.

I FOUND IT!!!

Hahaha

BTW theInquirer.net is a pretty respectable hardware site and the fact they made fun of the antics Apple did is...yeah.

Nearly everyone in the industry laughed at the "benchmarks" apple did by themselves since it was so unfair (turning off like EVERY feature in the compiler, etc.).

So depends on if you're in Steve Jobs bubble or not...

I use both amcs and PCs so I was wondering how the Athlons were side by side. Real life usage for AMVs and such. So far I like Final cut and Premier for different reasons.

Just wondering if anyone has had the chance to compare.

I think Ulead is declaring their software will work with the AMD 64. The released an article about it on their website.

"Ulead Systems, Inc., a leading developer of image editing, video editing and DVD authoring software, today announced that its professional video editing software, MediaStudio Pro 7, can offer increased real-time video editing and processing speeds on the AMD64 platform, which includes the AMD Athlon™ 64 and AMD Athlon 64 FX processors."

Well you can't really compare to *different* programs, but the CPUs...Macs are pretty much owned by x86 in pure performance.

At the same time let me say that it's not the hardware that matters so long as you like doing things they way well...you like. If you like Apple's OS's and their interface, then it's a moot point. It doesn't matter how fast you can go if you can't efficiently use it.

I know premier and Final cut are comparing two different engines of a BMW and a Corvette. They do the same thing but have their own ways of doing it.

was just wondering if stuff like oh the dvd rip and capture was either better on one or the other. I want to get as clean a footage as possible and as clean of encode as possible.

As I said (with misspelling) both mac os and windows works for me :)

which ever gets the job done says I
