Venting my frustration and fishing for commiseration.

Post by Chaos Angel » Thu Sep 25, 2003 8:52 pm

Ok, anyone who draws, please tell me I am not the only one this happens too. It's like... I can see something in my head, perfect and clear and gorgeous and wonderful. But as soon as I put pencil to paper, it evaporates, and I can't ever make it look even 1/4 as good as it looks in my head. In my head, I see every line, every ink stroke, but on paper, it tends to look like crap, to me anyway. Flat, uninteresting, lacking almost all of the fluidity and vibrancy and fucking LIFE that it has in my head.

Is it just me?

Nope, you are not alone.

But what frustrates me more is that when I draw or sketch something for the first time, it comes out wonderful. But when I actually tru to redraw it to make it look better, I can never repeat it. It always looks like complete shit, even though the original was a lot sketchier and not as clean. But I cannot use the original because chances are I drew it on a piece of notebook paper or behind some homework sheet.

No, you are not the only one.

This exact same thing happens to me, I can see the picture I just can't make it come out. Although thanks to the art classes I've begun taking and all of the practice I've been doing the pictures and such I've begun churning out are definetly looking better.

DUDE! YES! I can almost NEVER duplicate a drawing. Even if it was just a quick sketch on a fucking scrap of paper I found on the floor during Philosophy class, it almost ALWAYS looks better the first time I draw it.

You know...for me I never really start with a set picure in my head. Most of the time I have an emotion I want to convey and it takes shape on it's own. If I want to draw something specific, I will know my subject and the purpose of that subject but I'll see multiple poses and possibilities.

Now painting...I tried that and I know exactly what you mean. I saw this nice tropical scene in my head and it didn't come out right. So I ended up making 'modern art' and called it 'Car Accident' :P

But, Chaos, you should know you aren't alone here. I don't know anyone that can picture something in their head and duplicate it perfectly. Ask anyone. They might have a really nice vision, but they can never duplicate it. What makes a person an artist is how they cover up the blemishes and imperfections of the art from their vision. But I find it easier to start with an idea, not an image. Misty is right, emotions work well.

I think if I tried to draw or paint or something by emotion and not image, it'd be a muddled pile of crap by the end.

Are you going for art or anime? Some people, if the emotion is sincere, would see something in a "muddled pile of crap" and it could easily be art. I'm actually being serious. :?

I know what you mean though. Just stick with it. :)
