'so do you have any hobbies or interests?'

Post by OropherZero » Mon Aug 24, 2009 2:48 am

Okay just wondering. In a job interview has anyone mentioned their AMV interests and if so, how did you go about in saying it?

I generally don't list my actual hobbies, but what I know because of them (for AMVs, video editing software and such) if they seem relevant to the job or company I'm applying for. If then, it comes up during the interview how I know said programs I will then tell them that I make videos in my free time and do freelance editing.

I do however list my management experience from being in charge of departments and the like at conventions and also list the con chair as a reference. Since I've only held a position dealing with AMVs the subject does from time to time get brought up.

hmm don't HR people ask you 'what are your recreational interests' 'what do you like doing in your spare time' etc in the U.S?

Keep it general. Say "video editing." When it comes to getting a job, you never know what kind of rash judgments somebody might make if they see something like "Anime Music Videos" on a resume. That is to say, more than likely it wouldn't matter, but why take the risk of somebody seeing it and being like "that sounds pretty juvenile and ridiculous" as a first impression. Later on if you get the job and they get to know you, then it'd be a fine time to share about the specifics. It's a better to be safe than sorry scenario.

Or maybe I'm just cynical when it comes to this kind of thing.

I usually list "freelance video editing" as a skill on my resume and also the software I use...

^ yeah those are my thoughts Brad. I think its easy to be general on paper but in person, during the interview, they may ask for more specifics and thats what I'm trying to get at in this topic, how do you keep being general on the spot when you mention video editting without starting to sweat on the seat =P

I can see what you are getting at. Generally, I wouldn't list AMVs on a resume and in the interview I really wouldn't bring it up or want to talk about it. I suppose I would be a little more hesitant with my words in an interview if I didn't do actual freelance video work but instead only made AMVs and the like.

Personally, I don't find it that big of a deal. If I do get asked about AMVs I generally talk about it as a way I gained my skills by teaching myself through doing which allowed me to gain the skills I needed to do the freelance work. With some creative thinking beforehand you can easily mask the fact that you just do it for fun by simply calling it practice for future career possibilities. In the end you just need to choose your words wisely, and go into the interview expecting a question about it and already have an answer in your head.

Though I suppose you could benefit from a healthy ability to bullshit as well.
