Releasing AMVs before a contest?
Just wondering how people felt about releasing their AMVs before a contest it's entered at... I have a trailer for a movie that opens the same weekend as a con, but I am not sure if I want to make the trailer available online before the it debuts at the con. On one hand, if someone sees the AMV online and then goes to see it at the con, they could think "Oh, I saw this one online already. -YAWN-"... on the other hand, since it is a trailer, it might be nice to release it before the movie is released. So what are your thoughts on this situation?

I'd say focus on the con. To me, it doesn't really matter if the movie is released before your trailer. I enjoy trailers from years back. *shrug*

The chances of someone going to the con and already saw your amv is pretty slim unless you are a ready popular editor or got alot of attention in the announcement forum.

As long as you're following the contest's rules, it's up to you.

That is a good point, sometimes I forget how big the world is.Sonydjsnmix wrote:The chances of someone going to the con and already saw your amv is pretty slim unless you are a ready popular editor or got alot of attention in the announcement forum.

I guess it also depends on the rewatchability of the video, too.

I wouldn't worry about it actually, unless there are rules against it.
I'd say release it before the con... so that people can go online and download it asap, before the video is out of their mind if they actually enjoyed it. On the other hand, if you wait till after the con, they might forget about the video by the time it is uploaded.
Oh... and amvs for popularity == bad.
But I know you want it. Lol.

Pray tell, how is it any worse than AMVs for any other reason?dragontamer5788 wrote:Oh... and amvs for popularity == bad.

Well, it was mostly a joke based on the context of my post. I don't want to get serious about this... but I am willing to explain my reasoning. The vast majority of AMVs are simply going to be stored on this site and have a lifetime download count of less than 1000. For the most part, chasing after popularity is going to get you on a wild goose chase... for what? On the other hand, editing AMVs because you enjoy the hobby will not only entertain you, but save you the heartache and drama associated with popularity contests.Scintilla wrote:Pray tell, how is it any worse than AMVs for any other reason?dragontamer5788 wrote:Oh... and amvs for popularity == bad.
Not that popularity in itself is a bad thing mind you. It probably is everyone's dream here to make a well recognized AMV, or something memorable like Koop's Euphoria or Nostromo's Always Hardcore. But I honestly don't think it is a good idea to actively pursue the art of making AMVs only to become popular, or whatever. I guess, kinda like the message of Doujin Works. Its about the journey of making the AMV itself that you should enjoy. Not the money, or the popularity, or the success.
Well, that was a bit heavier than I thought it would be...
