Post by SF_Phoenix » Fri Mar 13, 2009 5:10 pm

I'm not sure if a topic like this has been made before, so if it has, I apologize for making a duplicate topic, but please post the link =)

Basically, for an assignment I need to research a website or something similar, and explain how things were done differently 10+ years ago regarding what the site does, which in this case is amv (or video) sharing between people, as well as providing video help/critiques. Or even before the internet, how were videos shared/critiqued? I wasn't really big into video stuff 10+ years ago, so I don't really know about this subject =(

Sarcastic answers are fine too (I can already see some coming, but you never know, sometimes they actually hold some valuable information =O), though I would like some real answers =P, particularly other types of technology that helped share videos besides the Internet and before the internet

thanks to all that reply :)

Pretty sure this site didn't exist ten years ago.

Well, taking it back to 98-99, the main AMV presence on the internet revolved around the AMV ML (mailing list). People discussed and shared their videos through discussions on the ML and promoted their own personal web sites where they would share their videos. Now, back then, there was no YouTube or real easy-to-use streaming service, and hosting wasn't quite as cheap as it is today, so there were far fewer videos out there. The majority of videos back then were seen at cons and local anime groups. Phade was a member of the ML and this was when the idea for the Org came about. It was around late 2000 that the site finally went live. The Org still didn't have their own video hosting until another year or so afterwards.

But yeah, the majority of the AMV scene lived either through the ML, or from the live con experience. Services like Napster, Morpheus/Kazaa/etc. certainly prompted a lot of the file sharing as well, but that's still right along the edge of your 10 year limit. Might want to get people like Vlad or Doki in on this discussion, since I didn't get involved in the community until right on that edge (mid-late 1999).

Wow.. It's really been almost 10 years.. Crrraaazy.

yeah, that was actually kind of the point of the assignment, to compare the past with today and how the website changed how things were done. I probably didn't make it too clear in the first post =/

To Brad: Thanks for your response =)

This thread might be helpful. http://www.animemusicvideos.org/forum/v ... rg+history

Vlad's post on the first page might be of interest. It is more of a timeline than a 'cause -> effect' list though.

I used 2 VCRs, and also did videos at a local cable tv station because normal computers didn't have the memory or storage capacity they do now.

Had to capture footage off tape cause there was hardly any anime on dvd. Also if you owned a subbed copy you had to buy the dub version of it. That's how things were doe 10 years ago and i'm glad it's a lot easier now.

 I always thought that method was a joke. I know people would need to capture the footage from their VHS but still... that is just...You guys are hard core :amv:

Actually, we didn't even have the Dangling Carrot until right around the time I joined, in spring 2003. The full Golden Donut did not show up until about half a year after that.
