Which is harder to pull off...
A. A video with alot of effect's. (Something like engel with the lip sych or tainted donuts.)
B. A video that is deeply emotionaly moving or dramatic. (Can't think of any.)

So in other words, one part of the community is waging war on another part of the community because they take their community seriously enough to want to do so. Then they tell the powerless side to get over the loss cause it's just an online community. I'm glad people make so much sense." -- Tab

Effects are pretty cut and dry in that respect. A beat hit is either on or its off. The lip synching is either on or its off. Vash is on Mars or he isn't.
But creating a mood is so incredibly painstaking. There are so many variables in the problem. Pacing, Camera Movement, Timing, etcetra. If your trying to make people sad, it either is a grand success or it fails miserably. There is no "well thats sad, kinda maybe sorta". If everything is completely perfect, than its a sucess, but if theres even one thing wrong, you snap people out of the mood you have crated and now there paying attention to a flaw instead of the video.
At least thats how I'm justifying my 6000 trillion hours spent on my new vid so far.

Since square one I have been going after emotional effect, and its finally coming around, but getting at those effects is illusive to me. The problem for me is that I dont even know where to start. You can go at it two ways, you can think of what you want and then try to produce it, or you can go to the program, see what you can do, and then hunt down a concept based on that.
Obviously going for the concept afterward is somewhat rediculous, the video will end up centered around effects that will probably over the top and inapropriate. But at the same time, any time I come up with a concept for an effects based video, I go to my editing software and start blankly at the screen for half an hour until I give up. The software I use just isnt powerful enough (or I dont know how to use it well enough) to capture the images in my head. I suppose if I worked at it harder I might come to the some kind of happy medium where I can use effects but it still doesnt quit look like what I was thinking of.
Making someone feel emotion is a matter of picking the right song and the right anime and keeping your editing from getting in the way. Making someones heart race as the effects pound the beat into your chest is a matter of hitting the right beat, making the right change, choosing the right feel, and hitting the right movement, all at exactly the right time, over and over and over again. I could be wrong, but thats my opinion.

B is a lot harder to do successfully. A will take more manual effort but is a lot easier to come up with.
I am impressed by the Utena video Nightowl did in which he did both really well. The planning of the scenes must have taken a lot more thought but the effects look like they required some planning as well. That isn't a flash to the beat video though. It is multiple scene sometimes on the screen at once.
Maybe if he happens across this thread he'll say something.
Tainted Donuts is another one I think the work was pretty darn hard but getting shots together between the two anime certainly wouldn't have been a calk walk.
