Waldo Archive History(For those that remember)
What was the history of the waldo archive... if anybody still remembers it
I think it was originally the Hawaii archive, then I think a guy who's nick was waldo took it over, then Omar Jenkins took it over (and did not rename it), then I got it at the very end?
I am going to be re hosting the waldo archive, exactly as I got it (still some "uploaded" videos and allot un sorted) and wanted to have a little blurb about it
Basically, I want a small bit of intro text on the root web page, which I will include the login/password to browse the directories with

Yeah it was Hawaii's originally. I think the handel for it was MDenny or something like that. That's where we all uploaded to then it became Waldo's (god I remember all the "Wjhere's Waldo's" posts on the list) which Omar later took and eventually came down shortly after the org came into creation.

that is not the pointgodix wrote:Realistically speaking, how much is on that archive that isn't available either through the orgs or through the vault?
it is a snapshot of amv internal fandum at the time period before amvorg
I will be hosting it for that reason. I won't be correcting anything, or moving things around. It is a piece of our past.
if I remember right, mdenny, who had the nickname Hawaii because he came from Hawaii, wanted a way to get copies of the videos that were being distributed on the amv mailing list. He figured out that if he setup a "public/private" ftp server using his college connection, then people would upload videos to him. (this revelation came later, after he graduated and moved to archive to waldo)
The first "central" amv internet repository was the Hawaii archive. When he graduated, he sent the hard drive to someone who's nickname was Waldo, so it was renamed to the Waldo archive. Waldo was in college, so used the same method, fat dorm pipe. It was an ftp only site, no web access, and the user/pass was shared on the amv-ml. When Waldo graduated, it was transfered to Omar Jenkins, who hosted it for a while, and when Omar graduated, it came to me. I hosted it for a couple of years, but the main source of its sharing, the amv-ml began to die away, and the amvorg came up. When nobody had logged into the Waldo archive for over 3 months, i took it off line.
I think that is the history. The bits between Hawaii and me are a bit fuzzy for me, so that is why I posted here, seeing if anybody else could clarify things for me. Make corrections, that type of stuff.

Heh i remember the hawaii archive. I think someone in irc told me about it once. I never knew about the amv mailing list back then, so I never found out about waldos.

More info
waldo = omar (thanks to doki for going through the amv-ml archives for me)
Omar setup an amv site http://www.WaldosMagicInc.net right around the time that hawaii was going away. He ended up taking over the hawaii archive and putting it into his domain and merging it with his newer archive. Now I know how it got the waldo name.
also, before Hawaii there was the lain.crinkle.net site run by Rogue (Ted Cooper). Hawaii mirrored of him adding 150 videos to the new (at the time) Hawaii archive. Rogue was tired and let Hawaii do all the hosting and the bandwidth hit, fading away.
Things make more sense now. so it went
Rogue (lain.crinkle.net) -[tired]-> mdenny (Hawaii) -[graduated]-> Omar Jenkins (waldo) -[graduated]-> me -[amvorg]-> off-line
