Do you think that...
Do you think that you can judge the intimate details of a person's character based on their artistic output?
Example: Daniel Chang makes lots of cartoon romance video using sappy 80s songs, so he must have a sappy and unrealistic view of love and women.
The example is extreme because I'm trying to illustrate a point. Quientin Tarantino is known for his sick violence and sadistic perversion in the sense of sex and women. Something sexually violent happens to most women in his movies. Having actually met him, I would say that this stuff he writes isn't too far beneath the surface, and it certainly doesn't come out of thin air.
I would be inclined to think that the best way to view who and what a person is, is how they chose to express themselves, but I've heard a lot of people say that the too arent connected to the extent that I think they are.

AMVs used to be pretty personal for me, lately I've kinda been a sellout though which I am slowly trying to be getting out of my system at the moment. I need to get back on the street man.
... :>
Anyways, as for your question, I think that artistic output is mostly based on how the creator sees his own personality, not what his personality would really be like. So somebody with a subconsious mental disease would probably express himself with flowers and happy trees while only a very good psychatrist would be able to find the subtext within the persons work. So basically all art is representing yourself as how you see your own reflection, not how the world sees you.
On the other hand if I don't feel like a geek but really am one it would probably make my AMVs still nerdy even if I'd think that they aren't. So I guess it depends on whether you really are putting thought into representing yourself through your work or if everything's just working subconsiously.

I suppose it's true for some people but not for others. Sounds kind of trite and simplistic, but it's my best attempt at trying to answer this truthfully without calling myself a pedo. =/

Hi.
I love you to Julian.
On a serious note, I actually DO have a pretty unrealistic and idealized view of love (or at least that's my own observation (ha my own observation
) based on previous relationships) so I'm not sure how to answer it.
To some degree I disagree since there are plenty of people who just make things because they're cool, but others also want to express themselves and thus fit your critieria.
I guess it's a cop-out answer, but it depends on the person.
...I've also made other kinds of videos ya know

And to give this post some substance, I think this is a good topic and should generate some interesting discussion.

Your simplifying too the point of negating the entire point of the thread.Cornwiggle wrote:Nah, I think it's more on their interests, not character.
Tarantino might like writing about women being raped and gory violence, but I don't think he'd be the one to go out and rape some hoes and then shoot up a bank one night.
I would say your interests ARE your character, or at least the pac-man sized portion of that pie chart.

On the one hand, "If it's about self-expression, you know it's gonna suck" (-Robert Fripp).
On the other hand, I think there's plenty you can tell about me from the videos. Likewise, I've observed some really interesting patterns in the editing of people I know well. Down to really 'inward' stuff. E.g. my own theory that my own identification with music more narrowly, and the world more broadly, comes through nature and still life primarily.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I express myself through Street Fighter.
I secretly want to beat up people by jumping up and down eight feet and shooting fire out of my hands.
