Viewers Choice Awards

Post by JazzyDJ » Tue Jul 03, 2007 3:34 pm

I was just curious what all goes into selecting the award winners? Is it all basically a system of friends that really like your video who usually bring those video's to the org's main attention?

I ask because I've seen some people link me to some EXCELLENT video's (which I thank you guys for) but many of those video's, as good as I thought they were, aren't anywhere listed in the VCA awards while I've downloaded some of the VCA award winners that in my honest opinion I thought weren't any better than the one's that didn't win. I enjoyed the one's that didn't win a little more that a few of the one's that did, and thought they were better done all the way around. Heck, I seen one winner that wasn't even a music video at all!

What is the process that is the VCA awards? Is it just a convention thing with politics involved where friends scratch each others backs or is it a legitamate quality video contest?

It's a popular vote. However you slice it, that's what it is, with all the good, bad and ugly that comes with it.

The vast majority of voters come from the "silent majority" on the .org. While some group politics are involved, don't think that these are the driving factor. There are hundreds of ways of getting exposure for your videos that have nothing to do with visible groups. Many examples of videos coming out of nowhere and winning VCAs are around.

Also, I don't want to sound aggressive here, but the fact that you thought a video was good really doesn't mean anything. It's been proven again and again that hardly anyone is ever happy with VCA results. Such is the way popular votes work however.

My only advice to people trying to make videos with the intention of a shot at VCA is: don't. It leads to bitterness and overpoliticization of what is really a very broad audience that'll have none of it and will vote for whatever strikes their fancy. If there's one thing that's more irritating to most VCA participants than the sometimes-puzzling pattern of votes, then it's VCA whiners who don't accept results as valid. They're valid insofar as reflecting the tastes of a broad .org audience, and that's really the end of it.

Very good post IMO. I've been enjoying your thoughts this past week. ;)

And I do understand and agree that what I thought may not be the same as what others (especially those who are WAY more experienced than I) think.

Actually, the rule is - the more experienced you are, the more unhappy you're going to be with the contest results :P Old-timer's disease is running rampant on the .org as everywhere, with people pining for "good old days" and resenting the "silent majority" which, by and large, is much more accepting to new-and-popular stuff. I think a lot of very experienced and popular editors still haven't accepted some trends in AMVing as "valid" or "good".

a bunch of videos were disqualified this year because of the "editor must not have any non-anime" rule.
