Looking for specific Advice

Post by JazzyDJ » Wed Jun 20, 2007 8:59 pm

Hi guys. I just read a few tutorials about action videos and it got me thinking...

One of them talks about seizures and crap from flashes... is a strobe light effect during a certain part of a song too much for people to watch or something?

With that, I figured I would ask you guys who are way more experienced than I what they think is the best thing to do....

During a heavy bridge with alot of guitar distortion using the palm muting technique (It's a Limp Bizkit song) that builds up to a fury moment, do you think it is OK to use white flashes to build up to the breaking point where the fury of the song is unleashed? I have several ways it can be done (Moderately at first then increasing to the guitar riff rythem), but I won't do it at all if you guys think it would be too much to handle. I don't want anybody getting seziures on my account! :P

What do you think about heavy bridges in a song combined with flashes?

No matter how seizure-inducing you make your white flashes, I can almost guarantee that someone here has done worse.

If you're really worried, slap a big ol' seizure warning on the video info page, so that people who might be susceptible will know to stay away.

Don't make the flashes full white. Make them a white overlay at around 50% transparency. Same effect, easier on the eyes.

Make the flashes 3 frames long with a slight fade in/out (eg frame 1 at 25% opacity, frame 2 at 50%, frame 3 at 25%), again easier on the eyes but still basically the same effect.

Why a white flash? There's an entire chromatic palette available.

Try doing something we haven't seen god knows how often instead, try raising brightness/contrast of the clip to flash or playing with it's color balance or some other similar modification of the original footage.

Hell why not try learning how to edit without making the audience physically ill. I know, I know, considering the videos on the org you're probably thinking that's not possible but really it is. Honest. I wish I had an example I could point you to but sadly this is the org so there are none.

All that being said, pwolf is right. Do whatever the fuck you think looks good.

Alternate white and black flashes. Trust me on this one. It'll gain you awesome cred.

The British Health and Safety Executive recommend that a net flash rate for a bank of strobe lights does not exceed 5 flashes per second, at which only 5% of photosensitive epileptics are at risk. It also recommends that no strobing effect continue for more than 30 seconds due to the potential for discomfort and disorientation.

Or make every frame a white flash, and I promise you, no one will get seizures.
