Do you submit the same AMVs to different contests? (I know, in most cases, you are allowed to do so. I am asking to see how common a practice this may be.)
Personally, I make AMVs only for fun. It's a thrill to see them shown to an audiance at a con. But I don't normally submit the same AMV to more than one show. I'm not sure why, it just doesn't seem right for me to do so.
Pray 4 peace! Not an AMV, something you can do to help!
I tend to submit all the amvs I make in a year (which is roughly three) to all the cons I go to. This is pretty much just Anime Expo and AWA. I find no harm so long as you don't troll the thing around every con regardless of wether or not you are going.

To get the most coverage, I would submit to mainly the bigger cons in select geographical areas. Running the convention circuit is just a fun way to showcase a new video, whether you upload it online or not.
I usually submit a video to about 6 cons or so. I've tried in the past to hit areas thatr are geographically seperate, shough i'll get requests sometimes to submit somethign to a new con. Anything that's around the same time frame as the first video is fair game. Even better if all their info is out for submission around the same time, so you're not breaking any "It must not have premiered before you sent it to us" rules. I've never expected to win anything, so "trolling" doesn't enter into it.

depending on the video I will submit to 3-6 cons. Some videos I make specifically for one contest, while others I make as something that I can submit to multiple cons.
Grant it, I send all my stuff from the year to AWA.

I was going to answer 'as many cons as you can so many audiences can be nauseated by your pathetic attempt at editing' but it looks like Bashar here basically said the same thing first.
