Which is it usually? [Song or anime first or both?]
You hear a song and think of an anime? Or you watch an anime and think of a song? Or is it usually a mix of both?
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.

I find I edit the quickest and get into it the most when I find a song I just really want to edit to, and pair an appropriate anime to it. But, unfortunately, I'm more often than not finding myself with an idea that I really want to do, but lack the perfect song to do it with. Rarely is it just an anime though, usually some theme or story I want to see pan out.

Although it's obviously both, 99% of my motivation always lies with the music. I may watch an anime and think "this is perfect for [music]", but the [music] in that case is always something I have a serious interest in. It's not enough for me to have something match the music, I have to be seriously into the music. On the other hand with anime, I can work with whatever footage comes along, whether I like the source anime or not.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

The song is key.
I have a running list of songs I want to edit with written down somewhere. I guess it's because I tend to base most of my videos around a theme.
For example, I have a song I'd like to use for a romance video, and when I'm watching an anime, I'll try to see if I can use the characters to express the song.
I've had a couple instances where I wanted to submit something to a convention so I grabbed an anime I was watching and scoured my music for a suitable track. Usually those end up being instrumentals
