Anime Movie Question

Post by plague69 » Sun Sep 24, 2006 7:24 pm

Hey there, as you can see I'm new to the forums. I only made one AMV so I'm somewhat new to that also. Anyways I have a question, when making an AMV on an 'Anime Movie' (not an episode), would it be illegal to use clips from it? I searched the forums like the rules told you to do before posting, and I couldn't find anything that answers this. An answer would be greatly appreciated.

It is illegal to redistribute any material that you do not own the copyrights to. However, most people don't worry about it too much.

Ok I got smart enough to acctually search for AMVs with movies in them, and it turned out there was a lot. So for a jail sentence of 20 years these people sure are brave...

Lol @ Moonie. Seriously, to answer your question, as long as it involves animation from Japan, you can use whatever you want. You can use anime episodes, you can use movies (Whether it be movies that don't have an anime attached to it like Princess Mononoke, movies attached to an anime like FMA Conqueror of Shambala, or movies attached to a Japanese video game like FFVII-Advent Children), you can use cut scenes from Japanese video games (like the Final Fantasy series). Hell, if you can get a vid to actually work using the manga as well, you can use that. But there is one part of the rules that you did miss.

I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. Forum rules "illegal" or actual law illegal? Either way, anime movies are treated exactly the same way as episodes, so when you search for those questions, you can assume that the answer applies the same way.

(I'm confused that they would be different... why would they?)

Anime (there is no distinction between episodes and movies, its all anime), is illegal to use and distribute in an AMV. However, the anime companies don't care. Most of them even encourage it.

The music companies are far more likely to care, and even they VERY rarely go after anyone. The worst case scenario would probably be that a company send you a letter asking you to remove your video from a website or something.
