Storyboarding issues!!!!!

Post by rwgirl » Fri Aug 11, 2006 8:22 pm

Hi.... um.... okay, I need to know something (please let me know if this is a very stupid question  )

Okay, I'm trying to storyboard my AMV, but I don't know if there's a special way of doing this or not.

Is there a special way of storyboarding your AMV on paper? If so, how?

Thanks :)

A storyboard is just a way of writing down what you plan to do with a scene. There is no real reason why you should or shouldn't use one. Normally if you were constructing a lot of scenes yourself using specific effects that require computer graphics, or custom artwork then you might use one to keep track of what you need to make and compile.

As far as I know, most people here don't really use them much. Probably the simplest way to storyboard would be to get the lyrics to a song and make notes in the margins about scenes that you want to use for particular lyrics.
However, if you still want to use storyboards (in the more traditional sense) here is a quick tutorial on them.

Here is a pdf of one that you can print
If this doesn't help PM me and I'll take you through it.

Storyboarding an AMV is like writing an outline for a story in the sense that some can do it and some can't. I've read a couple books that mention this and I think it can hold true. Myself, I cannot outline what I plan to do in an AMV, fan fic, novel, etc... to save my life. The reason it becuase my ideas change constantly and I'd just end up scrapping outline after outline to compensate.

One technique I have found to be useful is to create a simple base of your video in your editor. It does not have to be fancy or anything. Just plug in the clips you think at that moment work best for some parts of your video. Do this for the entire length of the song. Then, let it simmer for a day or two. When you come back, it may have a compeletly different feel. You may decide that a cut you used at one point could be replaced with another. You just keep building off of what you have. This way, you always have something going on in your timeline to jog any ideas that my be itching to get out. In the end, you may end up with none of the orginal clips remaining, but the thought process never ceased. That is what a storyboard is designed to do. Keep those gears turning so you know what to do. It may take a while, but I have found it to work.

Thanks so much for your advise everyone :D So far, I've made square boxes and I was thinking of writing the scenes and what lyrics to the song down with that scene. I didn't know if there was a particular way to storyboard a AMV or not.

Thanks again everyone 8-)
