Conserning ops ..

Post by guy07 » Tue May 23, 2006 4:57 pm

It's come to my attention that people seem to be practically giving out good ops. I go by the school marking system (7 is average, below 5 is a fail) but the op average is 8.41. That's way above what it should be. I'm not saying to give out bad ops to everyone, but don't hand out 9's and 10's so easily. Some people in op exchange give the other vid a higermark then they should because they hope the other person will give them a high mark in return. Don't do that, be honest. If you are worried about hurting the artists feelings, telling them it's good will only make it that much harder on them when they realize it's not good. 10 is for videos that are PERFECT or close to it. Don't hand them out so lightly. And don't just op good videos you see, op the bad ones too. They need the most feed back.
This is not pokemon, it's not about who can get the most ops, it's about who can make a good vid. Don't get it twisted around. Just keep that in mind next time you are doing a op.

theres also the phenomon that people usually only give opinions to videos they like, so the avarage also tends to be high for that reason.

then you get the people who make "okay" videos and "not so good" videos begging for ops and begging for attention, but because no one wants to hurt their feelings they just dont say anything....

Actually, 5 is average. I used to do my part and download random vids and give honest ops (usually they absolutely suck and their marks reflect that). To average things out, people need to start Oping random videos honestly. That's not going to happen though. People fear reveng ops too much. :?

I personally mark opinion scores with 5 being "average," although I didn't do that until recently (well, "recently" in relation to when I actually did ops).

This debate has been had many times before, and I think the general consensus is Image

I don't care. If anyone does give me a revenge op, then I can either make it public and invite people to read the op I wrote, or see if the mods will remove it. Plus, I give the 5-and-below-average ops only to people who make 'first vid, please give feedback' statements in their vid descriptions or Anouncement forum OPs.

I don't know what the character limit on the QCs is, but it's long enough for a decent review.

Yeah, 5 is the offical site average but I use 7. Oping is all about honesty, you can't please everybody. Some people give my vids 9's and some give them 6's. I'll admit, I'm never thrilled to recieve a bad op but keep in mind, if you do give a low score, tell them why and how to improve. And remeber folks "you suck" isn't creative critisism, lol.

The opinion system mainly consists of people trading pats on the back. You will never get honest feedback if your name is attached to it, thats just human nature. No one wants to hurt peoples feelings. No one wants to step on others toes. Everyone wants to make friends and be told that they are awesome. This isn't really good or bad, its just human nature. People are hierarchical.

Demanding honest feedback from people is unrealistic, and more importantly its not fair. Its not my job as the audience to knock you off your cloud and tell you that your labor of love is awful. You can't expect people to take on that amount of emotional bagadge to a stranger on the internet. Especially when they can just as easily ignore it.

The best way to gauge the response to your video is simply if people are talking about it. If you make a thread in AMV Anouncements and get 130 hits and 1 response, its a safe bet your video sucks.
