I'm Spoilin' for a Fight!!!

Post by EarthCurrent » Sat Nov 16, 2002 1:22 am

'Kay, I am now truly ^%$# off so I need to rant a bit.

There has got to be a way to disallow people from writing reviews and scoring their own videos.

I'm been clicking on a lot of vids as of late to see who has been reviewing them, and to my disgust a great deal of vids have reviews, often the only review, posted by their own creators.

Come on, if the creator has something to say about the video, they should be restricted to the comments portion when they list their video to this site.

To me it almost seems hypocritical to grade one's own work. Sure, a great number of us might be able to believably give a video we have made an honest score, but at the same time, a creator is simply too close to the work to be trusted to give it a score that will mean something to those looking to reviews to help them decide if a video is worth downloading or not. Either the creator will be hard on themselves, and give it average scores, or more likely, they will revel in their self-percieved genius and give themselves 9 and 10s.

I'd almost be tempted to say that people within the same "studio" shouldn't be able to review each others works for the purpose of this site, but that might be taking things to far. I don't know, though.

People, chime in here and tell me what you think.

I saw one grade themself and made did it public
10s and 2 9s and they weren't for capture and sound, so I guess a bitrate lower than my mp3s is a 10. a 9 on effects cuz there was none. 9 on effort (hey don't be too hard on yourself). Yes this is a dbz vid, and yes it has subtitles, and no its not their first, and I didn't watch it long enough to see a single edit, and yes its on the top 10% list

Phade has stated before that he thinks people ought to be able to leave reviews on their own videos... I'm wondering if it wouldn't be a good idea to create a rule such that your own reviews don't count toward the top 10%?

well the all tens are ruled out for the top 10% according to Phade so that shouldn't be a problem. Honestly I think it is in poor taste to review your own video and thus skew the data. However I honestly think that the review made by oneself should be locked out from becoming one of the public reviews considering how partial it is

Mmmhmmm, yeah, that's my primary gripe, Zarxrax. People are posting super reviews of their own vids to get them bumped into the top 10% lists. There's already too much monkey business going on with people trying to get themselves onto the top 10 lists without having to deal with this. It's just like movie reviews, I'm not going to trust a review written by the studio that made a movie, since it is in their interest to paint a positive picture of the movie. The same is slightly true for AMVs though more often than not it is ego and bragging rights that creators are looking for, and since most people don't check to see who reviewed a video in order to create it's composite score, this practice of writing reviews for one's own video is especially ripe for exploitation.

If a AMV creator wants to sell me on a video they have made they should try to do so in the description of the video. This whole, "I made the video in 4 days. It's Great. Download it!" type of the description I see from time to time is total BS as it doesn't tell me anything, and then they try and offset this shortcoming by writing an awesome review, for which they merely give themselves high scores, but take little effort to describe the videos good and bad points.

Where's the attempt at critical self improvement? And I'm sure it is for this reason that Phade lets people write reviews of their own videos: so they will be critical and try and improve themselves. However, I'm not really seeing any attempts at this. The system, as I see it, is being expoited for the wrong reasons, and that's why I'm being such a gripe.

Actually, if I was to review my own vides, I would probably give my self too many low scores anyway....

Not exactly, he's doing a olympics type of thing so for every 5 ops the highest and lowest are dropped, and the rest averaged. So a high vote on yourself will cancel out a low vote from someone else. The one I was talking about didn't even have 5 ops.

Any good creator is their own worst critic.

What is "spoilin'"? ;)

In any case, Ive never agreed with rating your own vids, but since thats a personal descision I make to not "falsify" my scores (though Im with Vlad in that I would give myself some harsh reviews, simply because I KNOW when I messed up where as joe blow may think it was intentional ;) ), I realy dont get upset if others do it, as its only they who dont get accurate and helpfull feedback.

Just my 2 cents ;)

M'kay, I figure I'm showing off my quaint Western speach. Growing up in Wyoming does that to a person I done reckon.

In this case, spoiling is acting as an intransitive verb within the sentence. It's definition in this case is, Spoiling: to have an eager desire.

It's sorta like: I'm itchin' for a tussle!

Or maybe nobody tussles anymore. I don' know...

I don't review my own videos 'cause I figure God would smite me or something.

Darren: Hehehe, I deserve all 10s!!!
God: I saw that, Darren! [blasts Darren with lightening reducing him to a pile of ash]
Pile of Ash: ???!!!

Besides, if I know what is wrong with my videos I'd probably just tell everyone in my comments section, that way I can ask for possible recomendations if I think it is something I need feedback on.

But this whole review yourself thing its bad karma all round.
