Does Anyone Understand the Rating System?
I'm officially stumped on how the Overall number is tallied on the rating system given by opinions. When I asked other members of a-m-v.org they weren't sure either so I figured I'd ask here.
How exactly do each of the categories: Orig, Visual, Sound, Synch, Lip, Effects, Effort and Re-View
Determine the Overall Score? Or do they not determine it? Or is it a combination of a few?
I can't see a set formula personally when ratings turn out like this.
Example#1
Orig( 4 ), Visual( 6 ), Sound( 9 ), Synch( 10 ), Lip( N/A ), Effects( 8 ),
Effort( 8 ), Re-View( 5 ) = Overall( 8 )
Example#2
Orig( 8 ), Visual( 9 ), Sound( 9 ), Synch( 10 ), Lip( N/A), Effects( 8 ),
Effort( 10 ), Re-View( 6 ) = Overall( 6 )

The Overall score is just another category on the opinion page. It doesn't necessarily have to relate to the rest of the scores (although if it doesn't, it seems a little funny . . .). What I mean is that it's not the average of the other scores or anything. In theory, you can give a video all 10s and an overall score of 5 if you wish. Usually I try to make mine the rough average of the rest of the scores.

Well, that and re-viewabilityrequiett wrote:Overall is the cheapest most arbitrary score tacked onto the system. It also weighs the heaviest on the scoreboards.

My marching band director used to say that if we went out on the field and stood there not marching and played "Happy Birthday", and played it perfectly, the judges would have to give us a great score, despite the lack of any entertainment value whatsoever.Solaria735 wrote:The Overall score is just another category on the opinion page. It's that kind of thing for which the Overall score was made (I believe). Many of the categories are pretty objective, but Overall (and Review) are largely subjective.
I could make a video with a never-before-used anime/song combo, stunning visual quality, uncompressed audio, every cut synched to something in the music, boggling and well-done effects, and flawless lip synch... and still have it be a bad video.

Yeah but I don't think some people should be allowed to be subjective. They'll give you high marks on everything but then suddenly throw out the dreaded 4 - 6 rating on Overall/Review just cause and with little reasoning.
Of course now that I know that it's not REALLY overall i feel a bit better about that. But still... *BOGGLE*

Well, everyone's got his/her opinion, and everyone should have the chance to express his/her opinion if s/he can do it without flaming, and you can't please all of the people all of the time*...Aria Uchiha wrote:Yeah but I don't think some people should be allowed to be subjective. (though I have somehow managed not to get one single flaming review yet -- woot!)

The flaming I can deal with a lot better than the reviews that go as follows.
"Good AMV, good effort, I really liked it. But it could be better" 6/10.
or
"Not really my type of AMV but it was pretty decent" 5/10
Apparently you can get away with these "opinions" cause I've asked the Admins and they said that they did leave why they didn't like it lol.
Congrats on not having any flames though.

Well, if that's their Overall feeling... a while back I ended up doing a review on the original 'Faces of Death' AMV, and while everything was pretty well done, I ended up giving it a low Re-view and Overall score because although the captures, editing, and effects were all good, I just didn't like it.
