Newbies searching for decent AMVs

Post by SS5_Majin_Bebi » Tue Nov 09, 2004 9:12 am

Sitting here just now, I was thinking to myself - how can the decent creators advertise their videos to newer members of the forum, quickly, easily and with a minimum of effort? Also in a way that ensures they will be spotted, not just an AMV "announcement."

So I got the idea of making a topic where the slightly more skilled editors (you know who you are, people) could link to their videos so that the new members wouldn't repeatedly make topics about trying to find decent videos. And then I thought, it would make it convenient if it were stickied.

Now I know a few of you might be going :? at the idea, but I mean, it's a pretty painless, low-effort way of advertising the decent videos, getting some more exposure and recognition, pimping out our videos more, and showing the inexperienced something they should aim to achieve themselves. Whatever cons the idea may posess, it has far more pros.

Anyway, to start the ball rolling, I'll post my 2 best videos. If other creators could follow suit, post 2 decent videos from their collection, what they'd regard to be their best products, that would be great. Oh, and make it a name link as opposed to just a link. You'll see what I mean.

Pure Fan Service

RevolutionsX

Those are easily my best videos.

(MODs: If you think this is worth it, sticky it. If not, just delete it and send me a PM to let me know. Thanks.)

Let's list the ways newbies have of finding decents videos:
- Phade's recommended list (albiet small and not all uploaded)
- VNC Awards (best place, categories, by year)
- Top Rated
- Top Downloaded
- Top Stars (many ways to display this)
- Suggestion Query
- "My Favorite AMVs" on your profile (to pimp others videos you think are worth it)
- AMV Announcement Forum (where more newbie creators usually indicate they are, because they want the 10's for newbie effort. 8-) )

So while this would usually be a good idea, I think you should just </plug> since there's so many other BETTER ways for newbies to find videos... especially since most newbies won't go into the forums at all. It's not like there's a `discuss this AMV in the forums' link at the bottom of every amv.

I think you have a point though, that non-superstar creators get very little exposure, while the VNC's have helped this, and easier con submission awareness and procedures help, there's not too much you can do about this. Many attempts are made to aleviate this, like the announcement forum, even in the org interviews they asked `what new creators do you think show some promise?' -- while these still only give minimal exposure, there's not much you can do about this.

A few AMV creators have done a `amv of the week' on their websites, and often features less well known or not megastar creators. Maybe you'll be in luck next time?

Oh by the way - this isn't a pimping thread, so to all you people who are convinced that your 2.14 star naruto video is "OMFG TEH SHIZNIT!!11!!" I wouldn't post here.

I would like the videos that may or may not be posted to fit the following criteria:

Some semblance of originality
Decent audio and video quality (proves it was edited with the good methods)
Decent editing (as in good synching and tasteful use of effects - not just random bits of footage strewn haphazardly around the song)
Decent FORMAT!! (that means NO WMV, NO ASF, NO RM. I'm talking mid to high res stuff, with either high-qual XviD or DivX compression, or a decent MPEG-1 compression)

I would like people to respect these guidelines for video advertising in this thread. And for GODS SAKE, don't put any Naruto videos in here, or any Linkinball Z videos, because everyone is sick to death of them.
(Exceptions to that include DSPs "Genetrification", Majin Kenshin's "Toushi", and a few of MeriC's and NeoGohans videos. If they can't post them themselves, I'll do it for them.)

your criteria are subjective, except for the formats and source limitations. most creators will think their videos are decent to some extent and it will be hard to decide which videos are "decent" and which aren't unless you give more specific criteria. otherwise, i find this thread redundant of amv announcements.

if newbs are looking for decent videos, they can go through page 20-100 of the top star scale or so. or if they want to filter out dbz or linkin park, they can use the search page, enter "-linkin" in the music field, "-dragonball" in the anime field, sort by star ratings, and skip the first page of results.

The problem with these criteria, like downwithpants, is that it is entirely subjective. A lot of creators may think that their videos are much better than they are, then post here, and get yelled at or at least scolded for posting crap. And yes, a lot of us are sick of Linkinball videos, but hey, someone must like them, because they keep getting made. This is why the top star scale and such have been suggested and implemented- the top videos' ratings come from people other than the creators, and represent more of what the community thinks are the best videos. It just seems like this would turn into a pimp thread, even though it's not meant to be.

Although I do agree that it is hard to get exposure unless you win competitions all the time and become a superstar. But hey, the super search has showed me some awesome vids from low-scale creators that never made it to top 10%.

And from a n00b perspective (hey all), I just use the search function to find what I might like! Even if there are many AMVs out there of regal quality, I've probably noticed them but haven't downloaded due to lack of interest in the anime and/or music.

Noble idea though.
