The main things I look for in AMVs are editing, timing, content, how the music fits, and overall theme(s). Notice I did NOT put special effects in there. Some of the best ones I've seen have not been the flashy, over-done things, but some of the more well thought out ones. Most of my favorites can be done in Windows Movie Maker. Some of my least favorite AMVs have been done with Premier or After Effects...people who have no clue how or where to use special effects can really ruin what could have been a good vid. To me, special effects are just an added bonus; they are not necessary unless you can make it look good. If I can watch a vid and get totally lost in its rythem, feel, and emotion, then I claim it a masterpiece. If I watch a vid and think "ok...this is a music video...uh, nothing hit that beat...wait, what the heck was THAT wierd effect?", then the video's failed.
That being said, the ones I have more of a chance of downloading are ones that use songs I know and/or like, or animes I know and like (not "or" here...I won't download vids with animes I hate, like DBZ and Evangelion). So I guess music and anime selection are also really important on my list of critera. But just because I don't like an anime or a song doesn't make it a bad vid in my opinion. I just probably won't watch or download it.
