How to be original....

Post by Wong » Wed Oct 20, 2004 1:53 am

I am currently working on my first vid, and am almost done with it(just need to fine tweak some editing and then add the audio, then compress, then upload...ok...so i'm not close to finished yet....), but i just though of a cool 2nd vid......the bad part, is it is for Voices of a Distant Star. :?

I have already done my searches, and found 70+ vids on this anime, and this raises the question...

"With 70+ other vids out there, created from the same 30 minute long anime, what can *I* do that is different?"

Well, i am not going to DL and watch all 70+ vids, because while i am dedicated, i'm not THAT dedicated =)

So far, i have a song and band that have not been used for this anime, so i am hopeing i can make it different, although the footage is more then likely used a million times already.

I really don't know how to use editing effects and such, so this will all be direct cut clips, so will seem rather bland in the "Artistic" column.

I am not sure how you all feel about this particular anime, but if you could give me some feedback about this, and any tips to try to make it stand out, it would be appreciated.

I can't say I know anything about this anime in particular. But I have made two NGE vids. That anime definately has a reputation of being overused. It didn't stop me though.

If you really want something different, I think your choice of song and the mood/theme you end up setting the footage too is a major factor no matter what anime you are using. Usually if the song/anime combo has never been done, that always helps. That's automatically something new right there. And there are people out there who download a certain vid because of the song used.

But sometimes it has already been done. That's happened to me too. In the middle of making one of my vids, another with the same anime/song combo popped up in the database. If that happens to you just watch the video with the same combo and see if your personal vision is going a different path. You never know. Turns out that except for one 3 second segment...I saw something completely different. I'm sure that happens a lot.

But don't let what you find in the searches stop you from finishing something you want to finish. It doesn't stop 70+ or 1000+ people who used that anime. You said you're almost done with it anyway...why not see it through? There is no law saying that a person owns the anime, the song or both. Just do it.

How to be original - by 8-)

. It doesn't matter if your a girl or a guy; both sides have learning curves.

. Of my AMV's ... the only one that is Original is Stellvia:
1) start out with an over whelmingly Agressive Student/Instructor.
2) show how he/she has their life going - at the time of the AMV's concept.
3) detail what could/would/should happen once they have chosen a path to take.
4) Bring the reality of what you have accomplish back into the concept.
5) get someones opinion, at the end, of how you are handling your new lifes path.

. To be original is to make others "see" something that has happened in your
life and let them live it with you.. Those are my concepts and values.

. In the Movie, "The Secret to my Success," they stated a rather cold concept
which is soo very very true in todays world, "... Alright kid, your in the front door;
where you go from here is all up to you ...."

Thanks guys, i had told my self those same things(not exactly the same words, but to the same effect) but it always helps to get confirmation from an outside source. As it turns out, my first vid has started back at square one, because while it may be my frist vid, i don't want to put out a crappy product if i know it could have been better, so it may still be a while before i get to do the VDS project, but it will be done, oh yes.

It's possible to be original with anything, really. Hell, if even I managed to score a near-10 in originality average on an Eva video, you can do it to something that has been used 70 times.

Music plays a huge role in it. The ability to approach editing in some kind of different way may be very helpful. The ability to be able to take a visual source and somehow re-interpret it, try and make it into something different, story-wise, visual-wise, or whatever - that may well win the originality mark over.

I'd say the most useful thing, though, is instead of purposely trying to be original in comparison to others, just try to experiment on your own terms. More often than not, if you invent something by yourself for yourself, instead of imitating or un-imitating others, it will actually turn out as something fresh...
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

aye, and since he didn't link it,

The Wasteland - http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... hp?v=32114

excellent example of how to take a way overused anime and make something original. I gave it a 10 on originality, the only eva video to get anything near that high from me.

In order to be accepted one must conform. Original ideas are shunned, the originator of the original idea is only appreciated after death. Are you planning on dieing any time soon?
