when should FX go inta a project?
ok i've set a very ambitious project for myself and am starting to feel overwhelmed due to its desired complexity. anyways in order to alieviate some of the burden i'm feeling how should i edit, maximum intended complexity for every scene all at once , or should i use "passes" (i.e. insert basic source footage, then later come back and time effects to beats).

I'd suggest getting all the scenes down first and then coming back and adding effects later. You might put scenes down for the whole video, play it through to check it over, and find that you really don't need as many FX as you thought you were going to in some parts... which would cut down your workload.

Effects-Happy
but, will they add to the story?
My point is that FX can be helpful, but grows-old very quickly.
- just my opinion

FX are as complicated as you want to make them;basterd!! wrote:... [to] maximum [the] intended complexity for every scene - (then later, come back and time effects to beats).

these were my arguements on FX of adding a floating "[E-F]" in a chat-room to a New Anime Series that was being released - called "VanDread"merlins_magic wrote:... because the affects and effects of any Anime are already "full of Animations" that leave you wanting more and more - I really just wonder how much people will tolerate when they start adding FX as a "good thing" and forget the Affects and Effects of the Animes themselves?

The effects heavy vid I did was heavily tied to musical elements so I went through and laid it out in layers. I just started at the first mucial element and did it throughout the vid as needed then moved on to the next musical element that appeared and so on. Of course it helped a lot that I was going for a somewhat layered feeling to thing and that all effects were happening outside the footage so I was still free to add/remove/change footage without redoing everything up to the last steps in the project. The times I've done effects to the footage I generally lay out all my scenes, at the very least all the scenes for the part of the song, and make damned sure I'm happy with footage before doing any effects at all.

Ironic I should come across this as I'm sort of in this situation right now. Although I think I'm fairly set on how I'm doing this -
right now, I'm finishing up laying out the 'story' of the AMV, with some basic-level attention to beat sync - though focusing mainly on mood sync and scene selection.
Starting tomorrow, I'll be looking to make timing adjustments and looking for places where I could add some beat/action sync.
After that, I'll start worrying about the effects...
In my case, I'm fairly sure I'll need effects. I don't think they'll add to the story, as my story will be laid out in another hour or two of work; but story alone won't impress people if there's obviously a lot of instrumental sounds being wasted. Besides, anything featuring electronic percussion/beat boxes pretty much requires effects.
Stages are fine. Do it in stages. It gives you a larger picture, and leaves you with more room to decide how far you want/don't want to go. And it lets you focus on the more basic and essential plot elements. Effects should be there to enchance flow, but without structure at the base level, there won't be any flow for you to enchance.
Good luck...

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Exactly the point I was hoping to make when I said that. If you find that effects don't really add to the video, then don't feel like you have to use them.post-it wrote:Scintilla wrote:... play it through to check it over, and [you might] find that you really don't need as many FX as you thought ...FX are as complicated as you want to make them;basterd!! wrote:... i definately agree that there no point in using effects just because you have them. I'm sure we've all seen videos where 90% of the time the echo effect is on. Thats precisely why i'm trying to use effects in rarely seen or used ways. I wouldn't have bothered posting if all i intended was to polarize the screen when there's a certain drumbeat. I, and i'm sure most others, would rather seen a timely cut to another seen in the anime rather than, "Hey look....the screen turns funny colors with every drumbeat, 10s straight across the board for this video", LOL

you'll have to forgive us, those who have been here a while, for there's not much we haven't seen in the FX department.
One simple FX I haven't seen in a long time was one anime charater from one series
pushing another Anime "Series" right off the screen ^_^ - hehe
If you think it will help sharpen our viewing pleasure, then go-for-it
