How do you judge success?

Post by kitsunebeolnet » Fri Oct 08, 2004 6:36 am

Not wanting to start an argument, just looking for different opinions on how people judge if their videos are successful...

2 of my videos are gathering LOTS of hits/downloads. :D But mediocre reviews. :x (This one is my personal choice. Something about them has got to be drawing interest.)

1 other has many fewer hits, but is higher star rated. :?

A couple others have higher opinion ratings. 8-)

Another won a contest. (This isn't very reliable IMO. This was one of my least favorite videos and I'm not sure even how or why it won. )

I consider if you improve on your previous video then you are being successful in an attempt to create a big better amv. As for ops. They are reliable only from creators that give you honest feedback. And explains stuff to you in the opinion. The ones that gives ratings and very little comments yeah they might have liked your video, but they could at least say why and what was there favorite parts. Star ratings I've always felt funny about because obvioulsy Gene's Last Breath has a 3.20 rating while Outlaws Don't Stop has a 3.14. Which isn't right. Cons are usually really good to see if your videos are a success because then for the most part you are competing among some of the best creators of all time. And that is where you get your feedback. Is by the reaction of the crowd. And don't be affaraid to ask people "Did you see the contest?" What did you think about this category? or This amv? Ask around and get some feedback that way.

Well I hope this helped somewhat. But this is just my opinion.

I'm not whining or worrying, I was just curious how different creator's judged their video a success.

I had forgotten about cons. The only time I was in a audience while one of my videos was shown I got LOTS of laughs, but didn't draw any awards. (I'm not grousing here either. This was a very small con and there was only 1 'Judges award' that went to an action video that was pretty well done.)

If I'm actually still impressed with the end product = booyah.

I've yet to see that happen though. My own stuff isn't much fun any more after months of picking at it.

Reviews and comments don't sway me either, always come from a bunch of fanboys/girls.

If I actually work on a video long enough to finish it... then it is a success for me. =)

Also, when people leave opinions, if they actually understood the video I would consider that success. The stars only indicate general popularity, and op scores only how well the video fits into the formula.

Fangirls. Ideally ones a bit older than Vic's. Like, twice as old.

being able to look at my first vid made..then at what I've done recently and seeing a marked improvement...(that's just personal success to me)

that and the random email/message from people who say the really liked such and such vid for whatever reason...(not that I get alot of these..bur it does tend to give a person a warm fuzzy feeling ^^)

the more basic measure for success on my video are things like:
Feedback here online
When I talk to people via AIM
When I see someone mention my video in a post
People linking my vid in their sigs
(you know the over all hype that comes around when you first release it to the masses)

but nothing makes me feel like a video did what it was supposed to do more than when i look at other people watching my video on the big screen @ a con. I usually take a moment to watch it myself before looking around to see others responses.. and then the reaction of the crowd when the video is over..

Getting on the top 10% is just a tool to generate more hype. :P

That's my opinion right there.
