Interlaced videos

Post by billy_wires » Wed Jul 28, 2004 12:11 am

Ok, here's what I want. Does anyone know of a video whose quality was severly affected by interlacing? I have no idea what to look for (insofar as interlacing being destructive to video quality) and thusly have no idea what to eliminate. And before you go shouting Read ErMaC & AbsoluteDestiny's Friendly AMV Guides, please take note that in the guide there is but one picture that illustrates this, and it has done nothing but confuse me. How? The picture shows an almost double image (link), but in AD's own I Wish I was a Lesbian, the same affect appears (link). This leads me to belive that I am not seeing the significance of the picture (duh).

You know, besides the request this sounds like it belongs in Video Help.

Oh, and AbsoluteDestiny: I mean no harm in using your video. I am just using it to illustrate the base of my confusion. I could just as easily used a different video, but yours is on my hard drive. That and you wrote the guide.

If I remember correctly, Shinji Isn't Perfect by CLR (lillieaskyez) had some bad interlacing noise.

The Ranma pic you found in IWIWAL is an example of bad frame blending on the DVD. That has nothing to do with interlacing, it's just that the people who made the masters screwed up.

In the first image on the page of EADBAG you linked to, the combed SuperGALS! frame, see how the "double image" is made up of lots and lots of horizontal lines? That's combing, or interlacing noise. It's what you get when you put together two fields that were originally from different frames of animation. On the other hand, in the Ranma pic, the two frames merely blend together -- no yucky lines.

Oh. OOHH. (Spoken with greater emphasis to show a new-found understanding). I see it now. Ok. Thanks. (I was beginning to worry, because the Hellsing footage I'm using has bending, and I couldn't get it to go away).
