action amv. need help alot

Post by bum » Sun Dec 21, 2003 1:49 pm

ok i bought delta goodrems album a few days ago and i had an awsome idea for an action amv (with eva) using one of her songs. the song has slw verses and a moderate/fast chorus. now all the scene's are battle scenes. problem is, i can fit the scenes with the verses to absolute perfection but when it comes to the chorus i suck. yeah, basicaly im crap at making action based amv's, and its kinda killing me as ive doen the first verse and it looks prety fucking awsome. im just stuck at the chorus and i need some help, something general, please help me, i suck at action amv's and its realy geting to me

... you bought a Delta Goodrem CD?

OK I won't hold it against you, but. No I said I wouldn't.

The key to lyric syncing, in my opinion is. Consistancy. If you're going to do it, be consistant. Otherwise try not to use it.

Action... there's more than enough of it in Eva, why else would it be so popular? You'll be fine just stop, take a breather, and get back to it.

Well, when I plan out action scenes I try and do the following:

1) Think of what it is I want to represent - a story, a theme, an aspect of someone's character... whatever

2) Think of the major elements of the music. Is the beat the major thing that moves along the pace of the song or is it another instrument?

3) Imagine that you have to represent whatever it is in number 1 with quickly changing footage. Think of what images you'd need to show someone - is it a condensed important action scene? Is it showing someone's emotional state (lots of shots of someone who is sad?). You will need lots of small images/parts of scenes instead of whole scenes so think of the essential things you need to show someone to get the idea across. Think of the order you'd need to show these images.

4) Try and picture in your head what kind of edit matches the instrument you identified in 2. A harsh beat might just want straight cuts, something with a cymbal or some sort of crashing sound may need a glowing (or other visual representation of intensity like an explosion, burst of emotion, whatever) and something that flows from one thing to the next may need quick fluid and steady fades. Try a few things out.

5) Keep the rythmn consistent, only vary along with the music. Flow is important. With the structure of the action parts try and fit in your little story of what you want to represent.

Smaller elements and cuts in videos are no different from larger parts - they need to tell something to the person watching it. A story may come to an essential climax in a fast section but the series of images you'd need to show are the same - it's just the way and the speed they are shown which creates the excitement.

If you dont have a particular story to tell try at least to keep the nature of the images similar - like a similarity in the kind of movement (think Rythmn Animation by Lostboy). Some creators use a particular visual technique to associate the images together. You can do both if you really want.

If something doesn't look like it's working, just try shuffling it around, picking a more or a less motion-based part of the scene, putting images together with a similar colour/brightness instead of ones that contrast.... that sort of thing. If it doesn't feel quite right then try and work out which part doesnt and change it. It may not be any better but you can always put it back so it wont be worse.

I think that's about all I can suggest as a general guideline without actually hearing the music ^^
