"Do it for yourself!" Is a load of crap

Post by nailz » Sat Sep 27, 2003 10:07 am

I know I just posted this in another thread, and I also know it's been said before, but I feel it needs to be said again.

Yes it is, because as a creator, I enjoy other people enjoying what I have created, rather than enjoying the thing I have created, and anyone who would rather create to enjoy the thing they created has either created garbage, or is lying to themselves. I've always found that saying here to be the biggest line of bullshit ever. No 'artist' or 'creator' or whatever you want to call us should EVER be making videos 'because they enjoy it. and screw what everyone else thinks about it.' thats why there's been a huge massvie influx of absolutely HORRIBLE creators. Creators that DONT improve over time, that take the ideas that have been done 100,000 times before, and continue to add to the trash heap. "Create for the sake of Creating" is exactly why so many of us GOOD creators don't bother anymore.
Annoyed at the "morons"? Show them up: make a video that really stands out, and prove that it really is tricky to make a (good) music video. That it's not something that just anyone can do (well).
I've already done that on several occasions. I used to be heralded as the Dragon Ball Z music video God. I don't claim that my videos are something special without something to back it up, so I point you to any number of the over 100 reviews I have recieved. People who HATE Dragon Ball Z, and more specifically, Dragon Ball Z videos actually enjoyed my videos. Why? Because I cared enough to get good footage, learn how to edit well, and quickly improved. My video's now get barely any hits, I'm never here, and when/if I do release something new now, the only ones who'll really care are those who know me and my work, and now that everyone here seems to be a creator, it's just going to get lost in a never ending sea of Goku vs. Majin Vegita Real Media videos, so whats the use?

Distribute your videos with kazaa and replace the filename with :

OMG ! Best naked teen I've seen - p#rn - p#rn - f3ck ! Very good - DBZ - vegita - DokiDoki+Aluminum+VladPonhert+Vicbond007+KCaldwell - sailor moon - hentai - amv - DDR project - warez - serials.mpg

Seriously...Its the same thing for everyone...

change the anime ? Leave your country and become famous in a country were amvs are not so well-known ? Lead a collaborative project ? Win awards, but not for DBZ ?

If no one made videos for themselves then there would be no drama videos. Cause god knows, no one in their right mind wants to watch another damn drama video.

omglolwtf!!11!one1!

Now when you can make other videos like your videos, you know you're the best creator around.

Anyway, Nailz, you are soooo teh wrong. You are right about how people doing this just for fun is making all these crappy videos appear, but what the hell is the point of a hobby if you don't have fun? Some people honestly can't have fun if they take this too seriously and focus on what other people will think of the video. They don't want to read up on all the tech issues, they don't want to think to the point where they find something even mildly original, they don't want to break barriers... they want a few people to see their videos and say, "Damn, that's cool" even if it sucks.

I do wish more people would start thinking a little about what other people will think of their video, but not if it takes away from the fun of making it. I at least wish that it would take people more to satisfy themselves, but I don't think that will happen on a significant level.

But there will always be those creators that make really good videos.

I only think about others will think now.. I have not released a video since I started thinking this way, it's been a few months and I can't change now.. so when I finally release a new video, hopefully it'll be good.. :?

People who make videos for themselves.. enjoy it while you can..

want me to let you in on a little secret? I have yet to make an AMV where I actually enjoyed the creaton process in years. The ceation process of all my videos with the exception of the first few I made as a newb were so horribly painful I gave up on half of them or more.
Want to know another secret? I keep editing anyways because of the sense of acomplishment I have when I finaly have a finished product.

But seriously, unless you are a sadist, you shouldn't do this if you get no fun out of it. However, I would place accomplishment into the "fun" category because it at least keeps you sane.

Oh, and I do mean sadist. Your videos hurt me.

I guess masochist would work too, but I don't care if you hurt yourself.

If you see videos as painful processes that are failures unless rewarded with recognition, you shouldn't be making them.

In general, expecting compensation for an artistic commitment is futile.

Who is GOOD creators? Who is a creator here, anyways - most of what we do involves mixing what's already there with software that someone else made.

In general, expecting a recognized artist, even if it's yourself, to follow a good work with something that maintains a similar effect on the audience is futile.

I suggest dropping expectations and enjoying what you do. If it doesn't resonate, if it doesn't engage you, if you feel it's an empty commitment to demands from your audience - you shouldn't be there.

Who is HORRIBLE creators? Who made anyone GOOD TASTE police all of a sudden?

Forget it. In general, in these cases you have two choices - leave the artists do what they want, and the audience members to judge them on their own, or become a pointed stick poking at the tide.
