amv jobs
OK, been wondering about this a little while. Why don't some of the major production companies of anime ask some of the better creators here to do some work for them, like do the opening or closing credits for the show? Also, some of the vids I've seen would make outstanding commercials or previews for shows. For the majority of shows that I've seen, the opening and closing credits could be done much better to the music they select. Previews included on dvd's for other shows are usually pretty bland as well.
Maybe I'm just crazy. Maybe they do get amv creators to do work for them. But if so they need to re-evaluate who their hiring. Just today I was watching the 3rd dvd of Please Teacher (US release) and it contained a music clip in the dvd extras that was basically what I'd call a terrible amv. It was essentially a bunch of random clips and cels that didn't go with the song that was playing at all. Not to mention the amv no-no of having mouths moving all over the place independant of the lyrics. How much better of a dvd extra would it have been if a well done amv was there in it's place? Could of got a creator here to take the same song and put together something that fans of the show would really appreciate on the dvd.
Maybe the vids here are unknown to the production companies in Japan. I doubt it. I know at least the companies that localize anime for the U.S. knows we're here and what we do. They can't miss the anime conventions for one, and many dvds include textless opening and ending credits. Why include those? Because they know people like us like them to do so that we may use the footage for amv's!
Thoughts on this subject anyone? I'm not looking for a job (trust me I've got my career all lined up), but maybe others on this site good make a great career of this, or others might turn a hobby into some extra cash and a chance to contribute directly to the anime that they love to watch. I'm curious about this. I'd like to see some of the things that are in well done amv's incorporated into the shows themselves. Anyone else?

Um...there are thousands of professional video editors already in Japan and around the world?
What you see as sucky probably has a reason behind it - they aren't catering just to you, but to their entire audience. Or maybe they don't have their entire budget to blow on an OP that makes people's heads explode with glee.
...I don't get it. I thought this was just something people did for fun. Oh well, I guess some people are never happy with that.

One Main factor why people at the anime companies dont take amv's from here in the first place , amv's are ''illegal'' in other sense its like downoading movies from kazaa that just came to video/dvd. And second of all , who care about the ending credit backround stuff , you watch credits to see who worked on it and stuff if u dont like it then dont watch it , as simple as that

Perhaps people didn't get what I was saying. Of course there are lots of professional video editors out there. I'm simply saying that compared to the stuff that us amateurs are doing here on the org for fun, the professionally done stuff set to music for opening and ending credits in anime shows and most of the previews and occasional extra music video type thing done for shows really sucks. I'm wondering why when amatuers here can do some great things, why wouldn't the creators of anime notice this and want to improve upon what they are currently doing.
I didn't of course suggest use of vids from this site directly. Amv's are illegal (duh....). However the key difference between amv's and mp3's is that amv's actually help sell dvd's while people download mp3's instead of buying cds therefore the music industry loses money. That's why there are lawsuits out for downloading mp3's, but why the amv's should be safe. Why come after us when we boost sales of anime? I was suggesting that anime producers should hire someone specifically good at amv's (perhaps creators at this site) to make a video- legally using their copyrighted material with their consent. This would be an improvement in anime shows in my opinion. It would up the bar for what shows should do.

"and who cares about the ending background type stuff"?
- the production companies sure as hell do and should. A good opening or ending to a show can catch someone's eye whose channel surfing and help build a viewer audience. The opening is more important of course. The ending credits are the last thing a viewer sees on a show- if good it can help keep someone excited about seeing the next week's show. Think about it. you want to leave someone smiling at the very end (or crying, whatever depending on the show).

Yea I've thought that it would be cool as well if they contracted amv creators to make vids for their dvds. I have occasionally seen music videos on dvds too, and you're right, they suck. The problem is, professional editors aren't used to editing amvs. They just don't know how to do it, its a completely foreign idea to them. They stick to the editing style that they know, the boring style that no one really appreciates.

There have been occasions where AMVers will get asked by anime distributors to provide AMVs as, say, an extra on a DVD -- these are the rare cases where we have a legal AMV.
Most of the people that I know who have been contacted in such a way have asked me not to identify them or what work they have done, so I won't disclose either.
If they want to speak up for themselves though then they're more than welcome to

AMV creators have been commisioned to do trailers and such for anime companies in the past. If I remember correctly, one the members here did the American trailer for Gundam Wing:Endless Waltz. There's been more, but I don't recall off the top of my head.
The response of anyone from this site who's done a trailer or somesuch for an anime company is usually the same: It's not the same as making an AMV. You don't get as much freedom, because the company is trying to portray something specific, and you're under their direction, not your own.
I'm sure most professionals who edit these things could edit them 'better', but they're not given free reign with these things, more often than not.

I would imagine a single extra that would take a couple weeks to put together doesn't sound too appealing when time and money are factored into the mix. Deadlines are a bitch, and extras are more of a psychological thing anyway. People like the feeling that they get more for their money. Put a couple concept drawings in their own seperate menu, and boom, it's $5 extra, mostly for that happy squishy feeling.
