The History of AMVs
I know nothing about the history of AMVs. When it all started, what was the first one ever made, what was used to make them, it's evolution toward what it is today, what to expect of it in the future... So I start this thread to learn more about the history of AMVs. Tell me all you know about it.
If you think about what you tought you knew then you know what you think you thought you knew but you think you don't and If you think about what you thought you knew, then you think you don't know what you thought you knew but you do.
Think about it! If you can't understand my sig, don't you say nothing about my spelling!

Fan based ones started in the 80's. Most people used two tape decks.
Fast forward 10 - 15yrs. Mainly right around 96/97, computer hardware got cheap, software was mature and teh internet was connecting people world wide.
Fast forward another 5yrs, everyone and their brother has access to a cheap, power computer & Kazaa. Where they can download crappy footage, crappy music & Premiere to merge them to make a crappy AMV.

But also, contests at cons have greatly increased the popularity and exposure of amv's to the general population. Cons have increased dramatically and almost all (or all of them?) have a contest show.
Also dvds of anime are very plentiful as well as dvd ripping programs. I still think that the general pool of amvs have grown in video quality even though there are people that use downloaded footage. It used to be all footage was captured or transfered using two tapes..either with two vcrs or an editing set up that created a master tape as you went along. That was called assemble editing and A/B Roll.
Now days, it's like klinky said. Computers are cheap and almost everyone can get ahold of one and a copy of some editor.
