How Do I Make MPEG's Or AVI's Out Of DVD's?

Can someone please help me out here. I would like to make a AMV from my DVD's for that extra high quality, but I don't know how to extract video off of the DVD to my HD in a simple video format like MPEG or AVI. Could someone please point me out or give me a link to a program that might do this for me? THANKS

There is a nice guide (the one I just refered) on this site that tells you how to extract the vob files form a dvd onto your hard drive.
