I don't think I've hit 20 just yet...

You as well although I'll be honest, I have not watched any of your AMVs yet. But I love Gorillaz so that will change very soon.

Perhaps if I was a little more savy I might have found the org around the same time you did Kio. But alas I didn't realize it was a thing till summer of 2003 when someone from the game club at college told me about it.

Still, it's been quite some time eh? I think my first ever video (not an AMV) is about 20 years old now.

Came here looking for hosting in 2001 after getting booted off the site that was hosting my stuff. Didn't really get that till the donut opened in 2003, but man, how time flies.

Wow, so long ago I don't even remember anymore. It was just the name of the local download server, and I guess it was supposed to sound kind of funny. The original server was the 'dangling carrot'. It was a smaller, cheaper server that was sort of a trial to see if the crazy idea of donations could actually support the site and fund the full 'golden donut'.

It's unfortunate that much of this site was never archived. I did find this thread where Phade mentioned actually switching over from the carrot to the donut: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=18371

I also found a post that Phade made on the yahoo group:
Hey All,

I know you haven’t heard much about it recently, but it’s time for the
Golden Donut to actually become a reality!!

In case you haven’t heard of (or just plain forgot) what the Golden Donut
is, here’s the skinny: it’s video hosting at www.AnimeMusicVideos.org. You
get to upload your videos. You get to download other member’s videos. The
server will have a storage capacity of around 1 terabyte connected by a
100Mb/s line to the internet (virtually unlimited storage and downloading).
You donate what you think this service is worth.

All the scripts for uploading, downloading, and tracking donations have been
written and tested. Exact server configurations and collocation centers are
currently being priced.

There is a dedicated forum at the org that explains more in detail what
everything is, as well as some good information in the old hosting survey.
There will also be an extra incentive for those who donate early to get the
project off the ground. You can also read up on the exact conditions for
hosting videos as well as the exact rules for pledges and donations at the
org forums. Please be sure to read all sections before asking questions
(most questions are already answered).

Pledges and donations for the Golden Donut will start Jan. 1, 2003. At a
minimum, enough donations must be collected to cover the cost of the
servers, colo center startup, any other startup costs, and 3 months of
hosting before the service can start. If things go well, the service should
be live in February. Between now and Jan. 1, I will be answering whatever
questions need to be cleared up before it starts.

Thanks again and have fun!! ^_^

Phade.

20 years is a long time. I remember myself 20 years ago: Going to the college, just a little teenager at 13, internet was slow, but awesome at the same time. Foruns was a mania for sure. Good times.
