5. 【AMV】This Is Halloween 『Soul Eater』
uploaded by TV Anime (August 10, 2016)

Outranking Hagaren Viper's original upload is someone else's reupload of the same video, with end credits cut off and a fat "CyberLink by PowerDirector" watermark in the corner of the screen. Disgusting!

Once again, too many new videos suddenly popped up in the midst of me making this list, so here's another that has to get bumped to keep the numbering from running over. And I thought I had this corrected!

A channel that's a mix of reuploaded AMVs, gaming videos, and content like this.

4. Soul Eater - This Is Halloween (HD)
uploaded by HitoriNoHime91 (August 3, 2010)

THIS VIDEO IS NOT MINE! It's entirely made by the amazing user sarfios ( http://www.youtube.com/user/sarfios )! I've put it on youtube only to provide a 720p video, 'cause his is only a 360p and it's such a waste, considering how amazing it is. So please do all the credits, all the appreciations etc. under HIS original video, which is here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw8pcxE6U9k
Unfortunately, the video that HitoriNoHime91 links to is no longer online, and it is possible that its original creator had their channel removed. Sadly, we may never get to see the original work that inspired this passionate remaster.

3. AMV This Is Halloween
uploaded by VermillionAMV (October 31, 2014)

► Created by ~ Hagaren Viper
https://www.youtube.com/user/MrHagarenViper
► Anime ~ http://tinyurl.com/zdzfo47
► Song ~ Marilyn Manson - This Is Halloween
This is the HD remastered version of "This Is Halloween," the one produced by Hagaren Viper himself that was uploaded to animemusicvideos.org on October 31, 2014 and also uploaded to YouTube on his channel that same day. VermillionAMV also uploaded the video to their channel on that very same day, steering most would-be viewers away from the creator's channel and eventually raking in six-figure views on the video, gracefully sharing the scraps with HV over the years as his upload slowly amassed a little over 2,300 views in total.

Say what you want about reupload channels, but I think it's telling that Vermillion simply titled this upload "AMV This Is Halloween." No context, no mention of its origin or creator (aside from text in the video description that, yeah, no one actually reads), just SEO-maximized keywords that do nothing but drive hits and further muddy the waters as to where this video ever came from or who actually made it. The very idea that it's the work of anyone at all is... just not important to this channel at all. Just banking in the views and subs and cashing them out since 2010 under the guise of doing "the community" a public service and giving editors "exposure."

Nothing but a totally worthless and detrimental force in this hobby.

I have no proof that VermillionAMV monetizes their video, but they also don't say that they don't, so who knows? TheBestAMVsOfAllTime claim "Everything on this channel is non-commercial and non-profit. I'm not a partner, no videos are monetized, I have no adsense account." I guess the right thing to do would be to take them at their word? I don't even think that monetization is the issue here (although it's really telling to see how 2010 YouTube culture stacks up against 2020 YouTube culture and how far the entire ethical dilemma of monetization of remixed and stolen content just isn't even an issue anymore, everything is ripe for the taking now). I'm just sour that the entire notion of AMV editors being able to have their own channels and develop their own followings (like videogame streamers, reviewers or bitter culture analysts get to do) got fucking destroyed by these channels, which totally normalized the idea that individual AMVs just belong to... everyone.

Yeah, whoever made this did a great job. Wouldn't it be great if there was some way to find out who they were?

There were lots of uploads here that got squeezed out of the top 50. Some didn't make the cut, others did and then got bumped out because I kept finding more and more uploads.

This was far from the first reupload of this video to YouTube, and while Paulo PT90 has a LOT of subscribers (80.6K subs), it's a tier or two below heavy hitters like VermillionAMV (338K subs) or TheBestAMVsOfAllTime (348K subs). How this particular reupload became The One that really took off when countless others never did to anywhere close a degree, I can't even begin to guess. "Just a channel for hanging out and view thousands and thousands of vids," Paulo PT90 writes in their channel description. There are 142 videos listed on the channel, with only two other videos clocking in at over a million views. Although it could only be a matter of days or even hours before yet another joins the club:
Spoiler :
There have probably been scores of "This Is Halloween" reuploads taken down over the years, either voluntarily by the people who uploaded them to their channel or by force as YouTube has cracked down on copyright infringements by various channels (or at least given total and complete carte blanche to third-party companies to freely do so regardless of fair use statutes). Perhaps we'll never know just how many alternate uploads of this video were out there at one point or another. Perhaps half of these still active accounts hosting the uploads I've listed here have been abandoned or even forgotten by their users, where they'll sit for years or maybe even decades as a monument to what AMVs and the culture around them became in the 2010s.

If you believe the comments left on these uploads, people passionately love this video. It's a Halloween tradition for thousands of viewers, got people into Soul Eater in a way that no other fan created content ever came close to doing, and was an introduction to anime for tons of young people who were irresponsibly left to their own devices online by exasperated parents who had no idea what their kids were watching and probably never wanted to know in the first place. It could have turned out a lot worse for them.

This was a waste of time, obviously, but I wanted to see how deep the rabbit hole went. Even after all this digging, I still suspect there's some hidden part of YouTube that's hosting dozens or perhaps hundreds of uploads of this AMV. I can't imagine what it would be like to have your work copied and twisted and disseminated to such an uncontrollable degree. I don't think I would handle it well (fortunately, this will never happen with anything I could conceivably create).

I have no idea how to end this but right now someone is reading this, so thanks for that.

Hmm..
I remember watching this back when it came out. I had no idea it had become so popular though. Definitely an interesting case!

What an amazing thread. I read through the whole thing. I have to admit before I was more on the "pro-Vermillion" side before reading it, but it's hard to look at something like this and not come away disgusted. I gotta admit I'm still conflicted - outrage over stealing content for views is partly why people's AMVs get taken down for copyright strikes. So there's a give and take that means the more freedom you give people to use existing copyright material in creative ways, the more you have to just put up with shit like this. I wonder what the happy medium is here.

Well this thread changed my plans for the night - this is absolutely the strangest, weirdly flattering, and objectively best thread I've ever seen on this forum, I'm completely tickled by this. Special shoutouts to the editor who remastered the video using episodes he screen captured from Netflix, the one who added karaoke that doesn't match the flow of the song, and the one who "recorded [the AMV] off Netflix".
