Opinions on Text inside an AMV

Post by TheDestineeAMV » Wed Mar 15, 2017 12:26 am

Hey all!
So, I was trying something new for me, which is to include text inside the AMV itself. While I am not sure if contests will allow that sort of thing (I'll check the rules later), I'm more or less just worried about the aesthetics of it in the video. Will it look okay if I put the text on a blank background before it fades into the rest of the video or pick a scene that the text will float over in order to ensure flow? Or does it not really matter either way? Please let me know what you guys think! Thanks! :)

I'm not sure about contest rules, but as far the aesthetics is concerned, I guess it's fine as long as they're easy to read, neat, and don't "cover" or "get in the way of" the characters (which is what I dislike about typical subtitles in subbed anime). In my Angel Beats AMV for example, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYOmUiPHvEA I hard-coded bilingual text. I don't like Youtube's CC feature cause CC texts often overlap on the characters and quite a number of Korean youtubers watch the video without clicking on CC.

Most contests that I've seen don't have any problem with text you add yourself.

The aesthetics, however, are tricky. I've seen a lot of videos where the text is not well integrated and only serves to distract. Then, on the other hand, you have something like , where the text clearly adds to one's enjoyment of the video.

It's really a personal preference. Where one person will like to see the text and could feel it adds to the enjoyment, another might hate it, hate the font, ect, and find it distracting... So usually it's recommended to not use text because of how polarizing it can be.

But do what you feel you want to do that fits your vision.

Uh, really? I feel like most of the ones I've seen don't allow it except for special cases.

Personally I think adding things like lyrics or subtitles into AMVs is distracting and in bad taste. Unless the typography is part of the concept of the video (like "The Fox" example above) it's just tacky.

That's kind of what I'm aiming for -- a quote from the actual anime contributing to the overall concept of the video. It will only show up once at the begginning before fading into the rest of the video, but I was just worried about the overall look it would provide and wondering if you guys had any examples (aside from "The Fox") where in a case of using text within an AMV made it look good. But thanks for the advice guys! I'll keep them in mind :D

My opinion: IF the text helps the plot do it...

Unless they are subtitles, in which case it's a different matter

I usually use text for comedic effect. Otherwise, it's a bit distracting if it's throughout the video. But that's my preference. If it's just once in the video, it can't really hurt it too much/at all.
