Questionset of the week

Post by gotegenks » Thu Mar 22, 2012 12:20 pm

what's your favorite genre?

is there a superior genre? What about an inferior genre?

are there any genres not represented by the current genre list of the org or popular conventions?

What's the easiest genre to edit (well)? The hardest?

What's the most popular genre of each community (youtube, russia [amvnews/akross], france, org, something else)

What's the most valuable genre, that is, what genre has the most important videos in the world of AMV.

What is YOUR genre? What genre do you edit the most, or what genre are you the most in touch with when you edit it, what genre do you feel the most.

I don't really have one since I like all types of videos.
gote wrote:is there a superior genre? What about an inferior genre?
I wouldn't consider one superior to the other, but for convention showings, Comedy reigns supreme (if done good) and drama takes a backseat.
gote wrote:are there any genres not represented by the current genre list of the org or popular conventions?
Hard to say.
gote wrote:What's the easiest genre to edit (well)? The hardest?
Easiest: I would say action and drama. Hardest: Comedy
gote wrote:What's the most popular genre of each community (youtube, russia [amvnews/akross], france, org, something else)
No idea.
gote wrote:What's the most valuable genre, that is, what genre has the most important videos in the world of AMV.
All of them.
gote wrote:What is YOUR genre? What genre do you edit the most, or what genre are you the most in touch with when you edit it, what genre do you feel the most.
I like action combined with all the genres (comedy, drama, fun, etc).

1) Ambient and experimental

2) Ambient and experimental ftw, action ftl

3) Ambient and experimental

4) Action being the easiest, Horror and drama the hardest.

5) A-M-V.org is the best for US style trailers and some romance, Russians are the best for WTF/horror and French are the best for effectsy nonsense action. Youtube is the best for editing Naruto BallZ, obviously.
Oh, and Czechs are best for ambient and experimental, ofc :3

6) Ambient and experimental

7) Ambient and experimental

what's your favorite genre?
This may come as a surprise, but I really love Dance videos best of all. One of my least favorite to edit, but there's nothing better than a good dance video to make you want to groove in your chair.
is there a superior genre? What about an inferior genre?
Err... My contraversial comments via "The Lip Flapper" may lead some to believe that I think that Action genres are of an inferior genre, but that's not the case. Each genre is essentially "equal", it's more or less what an editor DOES with them that greats inferiority/superiority in genres.

Except effects genre videos. Apparently, those are all the rage. XD
are there any genres not represented by the current genre list of the org or popular conventions?
I really think we need a "Unique" or "Unexplored" category. Not "Other" (which I despise, by the way, because it's essentially a "catch all" for tons of videos). My video Ka-Ching wasn't really any of the predetermined genres, and I feel like it would have better competed in a genre that isn't the conventional genre. Because while it had action/drama/storytelling elements, it was really none of those genres at the same time.
What's the easiest genre to edit (well)? The hardest?
Easiest for me is Romance. I'll be honest and admit that lyrics of love songs basically write Romance AMVs themselves. That being said, GOOD romance editors know how to take those lyrics and adapt them into a story alongside the anime. It should be a melding of two different romantic sources. The anime AND the song, which just seems to come naturally to me.

Action videos are hard for me. I have a hard time editing something that's just lacking in some sort of "story" and just basically a knock-out drag out fight. I have major respect for good action editors. Being able to create an interesting AMV that also incorporates entertaining sync/editing without reliance upon a story or lyrics? To me, that's the hardest thing to do in this hobby.
What's the most popular genre of each community (youtube, russia [amvnews/akross], france, org, something else)
I'm going to make a catch-all and say comedy/fun is the most popular of each genre. Every year, it's always the more "upbeat/fun" videos that seem to do the best in each year's award. Then again, I think that may stem from our desire to see happy things in our lives, rather than dramatic/sad things.
What's the most valuable genre, that is, what genre has the most important videos in the world of AMV.
Gonna go with "effects" on this one. These videos continue to experiment with new/interesting things that can be implemented in even our own basic AMVs if done well enough. At one point, masking was a "big kid's toy" only for the epic effects AMVs. Nowadays, even the most basic of editors can do this!
What is YOUR genre? What genre do you edit the most, or what genre are you the most in touch with when you edit it, what genre do you feel the most.
Romance, as I have already covered. Plus, I just LOVE telling love stories where the guy gets the girl, the girl gets the girl or the guy gets the guy. Everyone deserves to be in love, and everyone deserves their happy ending. [Except for Betwixt and BEtween 2, when I was in a very poor mood and just wanted someone to get stabbed. :uhoh:]

What's the most valuable genre, that is, what genre has the most important videos in the world of AMV.

What is YOUR genre? What genre do you edit the most, or what genre are you the most in touch with when you edit it, what genre do you feel the most.
1) I tend to like any genre as long as it keeps me entertained, though I do like romance and upbeat videos a bit more than others.

2) I don't really think there is a superior or inferior genre to me, as long as it's entertaining and edited well i'll watch it and enjoy.

3) Well at times i feel like Drama could be split up into many different categories, but other than that not really.

4) The easiest genre to edit would probably be action imo, the hardest could be any depending on what you're going for with the execution and concept of the video.

5) I would say the most popular genre of youtube would be action videos, on the Org it's pretty spread out, I have no idea about AMVFrance since i actually don't know much about them (D:) and for akross it'd probably be something upbeat or dramatic

6) All genres are valuable in their own way, if everyone edited the same genre it would be awfully boring to see even if they had different methods of execution or different concepts. The most important videos in the world of AMVs span from different genres and that's what makes AMVing so interesting. All genres contribute in their own way to make this community much more valuable.

7) I have absolutely no idea what my genre is, I just edit my videos without really giving much thought to a genre for it...Lol, the genres i'm in touch with when i edit are probably more drama/romance/character profiling mostly because you have to be in touch with something in order to edit those... Also I usually have fun when editing upbeat videos, so I'm in touch with those too for sure. The genre I feel the most would hands down have to be romance and/or drama (IF it is executed in a emotion provoking fashion) because sometimes you really can just feel the emotion coming out of a video (at least i feel like i do) .

I just want to point out that you don't specify what you are talking about until question number 6.

The only question I feel worth answering is: "are there any genres not represented by the current genre list of the org or popular conventions?"

I wish the org category check-boxes included "narrative," "psychedelic," & maybe "effects-heavy" (since for some editors that does seem to be a genre). I wish more cons had "off-beat/other" categories, because weird AMVs need homes too.

gote wrote:is there a superior genre? What about an inferior genre?
Can't really say there is. There are some more enjoyable, but they're all just videos in the end.
gote wrote:are there any genres not represented by the current genre list of the org or popular conventions?
Sure there are. You can infinetly categorize things so there are always generes that are not represented, sub-genere, ect. Are they needed, maybe. Not sure specific names. I'm not too big on the genere ideas much really.
gote wrote:What's the easiest genre to edit (well)? The hardest?
I can really only speak for myself, but I find the easiest genre to edit for me is Dance/Upbeat. The hardest is straight action or straight drama. Every time I try to make either of those kinds of videos it winds up mixing in a little bit of the other.
gote wrote:What's the most popular genre of each community (youtube, russia [amvnews/akross], france, org, something else)
I think nya hit it more on the bud then I ever could. I don't really pay attention to other communities. Though as far as youtube is concerned, I think the genre is just random poop.
gote wrote:What's the most valuable genre, that is, what genre has the most important videos in the world of AMV.
Every genre. There is always someone pushing the boundaries and creating newer and greater things in every genre.
gote wrote:What is YOUR genre? What genre do you edit the most, or what genre are you the most in touch with when you edit it, what genre do you feel the most.
Comedy/Dance/Fun/Upbeat. Overall if you look at my catalog that's is the majority of what I've made. Especially in recent years. I started off as a drama editor, doing mostly drama work, but then I got happy and content with my life generally and started making more the kinds of vids that I really prefer to watch. So yeah. I still do feel drama, but I rarely am in the mood to edit any of it.

Comedy
gote wrote:Is there a superior genre? What about an inferior genre?
If done right, no.
gote wrote:What's the easiest genre to edit (well)? The hardest?
Easiest: Comedy, you don't actually have to be able to edit well as long as you get people laughing.
Hardest: Comedy, because not everyone has the same sense of humor or comedic timing, so some people will struggle making a funny video that an audience will like.
Now...aside form that category...
Easiest: Action
Hardest: Upbeat, because to make a good video for people to enjoy, it generally requires a good set of effects skills. While it's not REQUIRED, it would be easy to lose in a contest to a video with the flashy effects.
gote wrote:What's the most popular genre of each community (youtube, russia [amvnews/akross], france, org, something else)
a-m-v.org: Dance/Upbeat
Youtube: Upbeat
Russia: Action
France: No clue...
gote wrote:What's the most valuable genre, that is, what genre has the most important videos in the world of AMV.
Honestly, I would have to say comedy. It's the genre that regular convention attendees look forward to and often remains the most memorable.
gote wrote:What is YOUR genre? What genre do you edit the most, or what genre are you the most in touch with when you edit it, what genre do you feel the most.
I guess most people would say comedy, but I really enjoy making "romantic comedy" and other fun videos that combined another genre with humor.

1) I love Sentimental video. :)

2) Not really. Genres are different, so for me there's no superior or inferior genre.

3) I don't think so.

4) Action is surely an easier genre (I'm experimenting by myself, and I should say I find it entertaining and easy to do).
I think Horror or Dance can be the hardest. You should give a nice atmosphere to the viewer or it easily get annoyed from the video. Drama are also hard, because there must be a good concept for being entertaining.

5) I guess Action videos are the most popular ones. Or Sentimental.

6) Every genre has amazing videos.

7) I love Sentimental and drama videos, so I usually make them. I also love Ambient ones.
I'm trying to make different genres now, 'cause I really want to experiment everything so I don't get annoyed from amvs. In fact, recently I'm experimenting Action/upbeat/effective videos.

what's your favorite genre?
Action, definitely. Whenever I'm listening to music, I picture dramatic camera motion and crazy effects schemes in my head. Unfortunately, I'm nowhere near the skill level to achieve what I have in my head (yet), haha.
is there a superior genre? What about an inferior genre?
This is a loaded question if there ever was one! No, I don't believe there is any "superior" or "inferior" genre.
are there any genres not represented by the current genre list of the org or popular conventions?
Uh... not that I can really think of, unless we're talking about MMV's or something of that nature.
What's the easiest genre to edit (well)? The hardest?
Y'know, people often bust the action genre for being easy to do, but when you try to tell a story and sync everything together, it gets quite challenging!
What's the most popular genre of each community (youtube, russia [amvnews/akross], france, org, something else)
No idea! Except AMV France seems to produce really slick action videos.
What's the most valuable genre, that is, what genre has the most important videos in the world of AMV.
This is a tough one to answer. Honestly, a good drama video tends to have the most impact on me. Once it gets to you emotionally, the video can evoke a powerful reaction that sticks with you long after you finish watching.
