Thoughts about the overused animes in AMV

Post by TritioAFB » Tue Jan 10, 2012 3:46 pm

Ladies and Gentlemen, as the title says, what do you think about those animes that have appeared thousand of times in AMVs, like Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, etc?

Normally if we realize that a certain AMV contains Naruto and Three Days Grace for example, we tend to avoid watching it, or just because it's an anime we've watched several times the first impression (for almost) is 'meh'

But this is probably because we watch the same, the same, the same and the same again and again. Perhaps a new style, a new original idea behind those animes might change a little the mood about those animes.

At my case, I recently returned to Bleach after 1 year away of it, and I was starting to watch it after the 340 episode and I already have some ideas for the new chars of the serie, I'm surprised not many vids have been made already with that arc though

I like this topic. :3

____________

Anyway, to me, I tend to be more weary of overused anime in AMVs. It's not a deal-killer, but it's something that I definitely look at more closely. If it's the same concept that's being re-hashed over and over again, then I'm less likely to be impressed conceptually wise, but I can still enjoy it in the capacity that it's well edited.

BUT if it's a new concept with an overused source, then I'll embrace it like I would any other video. Videos like Zetsumo can really impress me even when it's an overdone source (and yes, I realize that Naruto wasn't as overused in 2005, but it still stands because I'm still watching it to this day. >_>).

But at the same time, even videos that don't make anything new can be just as impressive. Heaven knows I've seen plenty of RxJ videos that focused soley on the relationship/story, but Fairytale of Lies was still enjoyable to me, and is easily in my favorite videos of 2011 because of its superior editing.

In the end, (at least in my opinion, it's not like this is a universal truth or anything) it's not the source that's really important, it's what the editor does with it that matters.

I think it's important for people to differentiate between an overused source and an overused type of AMV to that source.

I don't really mind much. I can watch 5cm/second AMVs all day and edit to EF all day, over and over and over. There are a lot of sources like Code mentioned that I don't think you can do a lot with except the same story/romance themes going on.

If the song is good, the AMV is good then I will gladly watch it. Even if the anime, song, or even type of AMV it is; is overused.

There are some cases though where I have seen a really amazing idea/concept pulled with a certain anime or a song. After that I find it really hard to be pulled by an anime/song because I am comparing it to the one I "love" most.

But, eh. Should just edit what you like ='3. Maybe some will like it, maybe it won't compare to that "one" video, or maybe it'll be better. No use stopping yourself; just enjoy.

Question 1) is the video any good on its own merits?

Question 2) why, then, should anything else about it matter in the slightest?

I'm being completely serious here.

Wouldn't originality be part of judging question #1? Well, at least our opinion forms we leave opinions with has it as an aspect of it.

When every video I watch starts being awesome, that's a valid question to ask. Until then, I don't care if a good video is a lot like a hundred other pieces of shit. If it's a good video it's so far beyond mattering if it's using non-mainstream sources to make it. There are so many substantive qualities you can critique it on before you even have to scrape the bottom of the barrel by remarking on the uniqueness of anime and music used. Once you reach that point you either have nothing worth wild to say or are being entirely too long-winded in your critique.

Uniqueness certainly has merit. But the uniqueness that matters is a measure of execution and finished product, not of materials.

You can make art out of poop. It's not good because you made it out of poop. It's good in spite of that fact. Your medium might gross people out, but if it's good it's good.

EDIT: After giving this all a bit more thought, I can see where the connections can be made with regards to overused anime and originality. Most AMVs don't attempt to be stand-alone pieces; They're fan-vids that bring very little in the way of their own story to bear. They rely heavily on the audience to recognize and appreciate the connotations a scene or a character bring to the party. They rely on the anime's story and the emotions the viewer already has about the character or scene to be present. They're montages. Now, there's nothing wrong with montages, but if you don't do anything to make the video anything special beyond that, people get sick of it. They they start to correlate your non-original montage with all the others they've seen and make some logical leaps that lead them to say all montages are unoriginal, then they make more leaps and that leads to "If I use well known anime, I'm being unoriginal." Not only is that logic flawed, it's the same sort of backwards logic that gives people the idea that all AMVs are single scene LBZ videos with macro blocks the size of billiard balls and cartoon network logos in the corner.

TLDR - originality is a measure of the end product, not of its parts.

EDIT to fix horrible phone formatting / punctuation / grammar.

Well it's never a good thing watch the same anime/music/type combination over and over again. But, like Code said
CodeZTM wrote:it's not the source that's really important, it's what the editor does with it that matters.
..and I also agree with this:
Ileia wrote:I think it's important for people to differentiate between an overused source and an overused type of AMV to that source.
So I think that the originality is important, but when someone does a great work despite the source/anime utilized, I appreciate it anyway.
