What's in a name?

Post by gotegenks » Thu Dec 01, 2011 12:39 pm

How much do you think names matter, screen name of the editor, name of the video, Name of the announcement thread, name of the studio?

You think some get more attention than others? if so, what kinds of names? Like for screen names, you think It's better to have an originalish name than one like "xuchihasharingan1996x." With video titles, you think professional titles are better than "FF/MSI StupidMotherFucker" or how about random names that i see in a bunch of thread that are just jokes. What about putting your studio name in the thread title. What kinds of names have better connotation, what do you think either other people or you would look at in a better light? Do names not matter at all?

I think names contribute to a video or a user's memorability. Easier to remember a user with an original name even if they suck than a decent editor with x's and numbers in their name. Also easier to remember videos that have song-like titles than something like "I made this in an hour.avi," at least for me.

Video names show some form of creativity, I suppose - on the same level as any title really. You want something to be memorable enough that people who don't rename their files can search for it easily if nothing else.

I've never really put much thought into studio names, handles, etc. to be completely honest, if you're not familiar to me, i probably won't look at your announcement thread. Nothing personal, I just don't really watch as many videos as I used to, which is a shame. I'm sure a lot of us are in the same boat. Maybe a "watch X random videos + Star/QC them" thread might liven things up around here...

I'm terrible with titles and end up defaulting to the song title or a song lyric for the title most of the time. Its something I want to change though cause I think some titles lend themselves to a little more memorability, but only if the video itself was memorable in the first place, the name/title won't do it on its own unless its some really awesome title. On that note, I get annoyed with titles that would otherwise be plain but use really goofy fonts for weird accents and tick marks above what would have normal letters, unless the theme/motif of the video fit for it.

For usernames/screen names I think there is some sense of name recognition but thats true for anything, if you make good stuff you could probably have a ridiculous name like XxGokuUchihaKurosaki1990xX and still be recognized but it would probably be a hurdle for anyone to take you seriously at first, and people will end up shortening it to some easier to remember nickname anyways.

For Studio-names I think either simple names are better than ones trying to evoke too much of an image. Some names that come to mind that are memorable and not over the top are like soul's team, re-evolution, AuN. They're short and simple and don't whack you over the head with some strange name thats trying to be deep or philosophical but really is empty and meaningless like Dark Echoes of the Abyss Studios or something silly like that.

Although I have no idea what AuN means or stands for and I've been curious for awhile, so someone with the answer fill me in on that please. :P

So I guess in summary, its easier to take seriously something thats associated with names that aren't ridiculous or overly outlandish.

I generally look more at video titles than editor names, but if you have more than 4 x's, an anime character name, and a string of numbers greater than 3, I'm likely to be VERY afraid of your work. Slightly shallow on my part, I know...

That being said, I generally look at the song/anime more than a username or title.

Oh, and filenames like amvfinal5.mp4 or narutoamv34betazarx264.mp4 irritates the living hell out of me. I would not be a bit sad if the org enforced a file-naming requirement. Generally, I rename files to something like [Editorname] Title.mp4 anyway, so I guess that's not much of a complaint anyway.
