Also, a-m-v.org hosts the files at vastly higher quality and with their own codecs instead of the flash video codecs that youtub and google video use.
Just saw your sig.

What, exactly, did I ever do to you? If you don't like my vid, come out and say so, but for godsakes don't attack me over it.

I would think that the music companys would be scared for their money because if we don't buy their music then their fucked. They start off on their bullshit about copyright laws and they could totally be screwed if we didn't buy their CD's. I think we need to put them in their place. Their totally dependant on us.

If we stop buying, they will stop making music, and then what will we make AMVs from?

Thats really unlikely. They wouldn't be making such a fuss over copyright laws about downloading music if they didn't want to keep their business alive. They arn't gonna stopo making music especially when it makes them an assload of money. So more or less the music companys are our bitches. lol 8-) And iam also a musician so i understand the subject from both perspectives. I realize amv's are fan made, but that dosen't change the fact that its illegal to have them on the .org. At the same time i feel that it is cool that people like making amv's becauser they like the bands music and its just another way to show how much they like it.

I think I have a solution.

That dude you were argueing with SQ should shut the hell up. If he had a site like this for years moving smoothly then was confronted by a music label that they know they are not even allowed to be messing with I think that dude would let go to.

Hey, let's think of what may have happened if Phade said "F5#@ YOU!!" to that label:

1. Site could have been shut down completely

2. Site could have been Sued to the point of taking down more AMV's

3. Shit! They could have done some Kazaa bull and started finding us AMVers and sending us to Jail!!

I'm fine with Phade's choice and that bitch who was argueing with you would need a big ass site with thousands of members to comprehend with Phade's decision making.

ya and im to young to go to jail :?

but seriously that guy needs to get a fucking tast of life and deal with these kinda of things! man if phade wasnt brave enough to even go to court we would surly be screwd right now! so phades bravery is shown in his actions I think any body who thinks phade is a coward should shut the hell up right now and get the hell over it!

And my general problem is not with this particular situation, not with the edit function thing, not with enforcing taboo on commonly known words - but with the strange mixture of corporate-like control of information philosophy and attempts to remain an amateur fansite behind those issues. Which I believe is very inadequate to this site's character and size, and dangerous in the long run.
Do you think it's possible for a site with half a milion users and hosting nearly 100 thousand videos with copyrighted content to stay in the grey area and remain unbothered? I don't think so.
Ok, I see now. Most of the things mentioned there are all pretty much established parts of keeping the site running smoothly form what I can tell.
Things like 'word replacement', edit functions and topic locks all have their place. There are, and have been plenty of suggestions on ways to bring back items like the OT forum, and edit functions for donators etc.. Pretty much it looks like that's not going to happen. That is all forum related though, and hence not really all that big of a deal, at least not to me. Mostly it has the flavor of mods trying to be objective in their control while still maintaining

I'm inclined to agree with you on the amatuer fansite issue, I can't see that working forever. I can't see a (practical) solution to the problem either.
The "It's been okay until now, we managed to minimise the Wind Up damage, so now be grateful, stay quiet, and hope no one else will notice us" mentality is just hiding your head in the sand. In Org's shape and situation, it's the worst it can do. If nothing changes, then it's not "if", but "when" the site is taken down, probably with bad consequences to many people. That's why I'm concerned.
I can't really see a valid solution here. Well, no actually, I can. The .org can return to simply being a database and stop hosting videos altogether. To date I haven't seen anything that lets us have our cake and eat it too. The only real way to solve it is to change the law. While I can't predict the future, I can say that it seems pretty unlikely. Just the act of ripping a dvd to hard drive is illegal, to mention all the RIAA stuff with the music. Ironically, fansub stuff might be the most legit since it's unlicenced.
, I believe all the issues I mentioned are related. I don't mind if the "no edit button" part gets moved to Site Feedback. I just really hope to get an honest, non-automated answer and comment to my questions and points. From Kalium, or someone else "in a position to know".
I don't think you've been getting automated responses. I think that the site mods probably are just as concerned about the issues as anyone else.
The real problem is that there isn't a satisfactory solution. You mentioned transparency. What areas do you think are being hidden from the users? Other than a direct transcript of Phades meeting with the people at windup, I got a pretty good feeling for what happened in his posts. Going back and reading them gives you a pretty good sense of the breathless panic, and various attempts to salvage what ever is possible.

If you have rational workable solutions for what you've suggested as problems I'd like to know what they are.
