No, they're not all art.

If everything is art, than actually nothing is art, as there is then no value that makes art art, which in turn makes art not exist.

but some people value those kinds of art... which goes back to that whole "art is in the eye of the beholder" deal

Still TJ has a point here, one that I wanted to bring out. Art has to have some kind of definition or else the word is meaningless. I'm not so concerned with coming to some kind of consensus, rather I simply want to know what everyone feels that definition is.

The problem is that art can be very hard to define, even to ones self.

For me personally, the one thing that needs to exist for art to be art is meaning (which of course, the definition of which can also be heavily argued). Whether that meaning is applied consciously or unconciously to the work, or is placed there purposely by the creator of such a work or is simply found by the viewer doesn't matter.

I tend to define art as "what those crazies in the art school do".

Which basically means I can avoid it, but isn't a very helpful definition.

I define art as 'something that a person creates with the intention of enjoyment for himself and or others'
This pretty much includes everything, but it also has parameteres for the good stuff, I believe.

Will write more later when I get back from teh school:up:

Actually I believe the term for that is "entertainment"

Not that I mean it in a derogatory way though...
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

Can't AMVs also be considered as entertainment?
No, I should rephrase that. I more or less define it as 'creation with meaning intended to move people OR just creation with meaning', since a lot of people misintentionally create art. Like that earlier example of pissing in the snow? That can be considered art as you ARE moved. In a certain way (a more precise term would be disgusted and shocked possibly, but that works too)

Actually, if they're not all art, it doesn't make art less important... it makes an artist's value to society practically nothing, but it doesn't decrease the value of the art itself.
