The "unauthorized" part is the key in that.

If the reproduction, broadcasting, etc. falls within Fair Use guidelines, it's authorized, and there's no problem.

I posted the same question (re: Plan B) on another forum I frequent to get some more ideas on what to do. If anyone's interested, the discussion can be found here: http://www.gamingforce.com/forums/showt ... hp?t=79298

The point is that is can be done, and the people doing it wouldn't really see it as illegal. After all, there is no law banning people from distributing AMV's...yet...

Plus, I've had very little difficulty splitting audio from video. I've done it before with my DVD's because there was an audio clip that I wanted, and it wasn't difficult or time-consuming.

I've got no worries. Plenty of bands out there that I like that I can get permission from.

Namely you?

Worst could become best if it includes your absence from posting.

This reminds me ..... The concept of AMV studios has historically been just a way to sound cool whether it was just one person or a group. Adding any more importance to "name recognition" in the AMV community does little damage since it jumped the shark a long time ago and is one of the things that has ultimately destroyed what this site used to be known for.

You people just don't seem to get it do you? AMV-ing is illegal. period. end of story. it isn't a grey area, there is no inconsistency in the laws, it's illegal. It doesn't matter how people view it, it's illegal.

On the subject of fair use rights: i don't think we have any, look at what we do: we take music, without permission and distribute it for free for all and sundry to get hold of, that is a violation of copyright whether there is a profit or not makes precious little difference.

Now, please, someone lock this, it's getting damn old.

Oh, man you’ve made me see that light. How could I have been so foolish? I’ve destroyed the livelihoods of thousands upon thousands of our most artistic minds. It’s so illegal; I‘ve have contributed to the destruction of both domestic and foreign markets. I am no better than a terrorist. Bush should put me on the Axis of Evil and persecute me to the full extent of the law. My life is forfeit.

It is the breaking of the CSS encryption on DVDs and the distrobution of amvs that is illegal. Niether are absolutely required to be performed in the creation of an amv.
