I tried a CD with a return address. It ran fine in my 5.25" CDRW but when I put it in my laptop's internal drive there was a very noticable balancing issue (about 5 times the vibration of a commercial CD). In all tests the stickered CD read without any problems, just added vibrations.
Personally I would love printable labels too because of the neatness and ease but I'd hate for them to cause a problem. Labeled CDs can also cause problems in slot loading drives if it adds to much height.

sounds like a good idea
after spending a half hour thinking about it (i was also downloading some music, so don't think i spaced out or something), i think that idea is really good. there're no problems, aside from the already mentioned part of unlegible writing, that i could think of., with one exception: the CD-Rs. i know from experience that not all CD-Rs are created equal; lots of brands may sell them cheap, and the CDs are of excellent quality, like Memorex. but there are a few companies out there of whom i have been a victim.
but i digress; you should post some restrictions for the spindles, Red Wolf, if this is to go off without a hitch. Excellent idea, though

i know that, i can read
i'm not an idiot, so don't think of me as one! i just felt those points were very important, and should probably have been restated. some people tend to skip over some messages, and may not read the previous stuff; that's why i restated it

Well printed labels are out. Just had my laser printer checked out because of some problems I've been having with print quality and it turns out it was due to a piece of Avery label getting stuck on the fuser. Luckily the printer tech here at work got bored so he checked it out for me so I didn't have any cost but I'm not going to be wanting to do mass prints of labels if it'll kill off a printer I can't replace easily.
What I think I'll end up doing is list exactly how every CD should be labeled (to prevent confusion) and if I can't read the handwriting then it doesn't go through. This is a free service after all so I don't think it is too much to ask for some effort from the beneficiary.

You could do this with out the stickers, by putting a sheet in with the spindle that is number 1-50.Then using a shrapie on the cds to number them too. Then sheet would be a list of what cd has what. 8)Jace Tsunami wrote:just put REALLY TINY stickers, like return address labels on them.
you don't even have to completley label the CD. Just put a code on the stickers, then print out on one piece of paper a table of contents
Like, Label A5 = Koopiskeva
something liek that.
Many minds in this head.

Putting a code on the CDs, such as 1-50, and including a piece of paper deciphering the code isn't a bad idea. I could even put the numbers in an out of the way section of the CD so the owner could later label the CDs more fully themselves. I don't think that would produce too much more work for me. Thanks, Jace and sev7.
That would also allow people to ship me sealed spindles of CD-Rs which should provide some added protect for the initial shipping. Drop shipping a new CD spindle to me wouldn't work, though, since one would still need to send me postage and shipping materials (I'd want to get it all in one package). Assuming I go with a number label system would anyone have a problem with having to send in a sealed spindle?
