Ever since you said that, My Brain has so pissed on itself trying to comprehend what your looking for.

All I understand is your wanting to see videos that change course and succeed while doing it. :3

Actually, here's a serious comment, and it's even related to my first, facetious post.

I think one attribute common to the videos linked here is that their appeal tends to be limited to those who are familiar with the field. You've probably heard "art for art's sake" thrown around in other fields, and I think something similar applies here.

As such, I think it's a mistake to label such videos as not "advancing AMVs at all". They're trivially an advancement in the most technical sense, because (unless the video was a direct copy) it's a different permutation of music and visuals, which gives us all more to go on, and (who knows) might spark an idea that has wide mainstream appeal.

Whether or not you like such relatively indulgent work is, of course, your own decision.

Oh, and some notes on urban suite, since it was mentioned here: I started that video by listening to some audio samples I grabbed from AbsoluteDestiny. I felt that the music was just much too cool to not do an AMV with it. So I bought the CD without a clue of what I'd AMV it with.

The concept came much later, after I had listened to the album about 324823842 times and burned my brain silly on it. Even with the concept in mind, I still ended up primarily working to illustrate what I saw in the music, with concept as a secondary guide.

(That sounds so pretentious. Sorry.)

My next 2 projects involve 3d animation and a MAD, so I'm going to reserve judgment until i see myself as part of the "problem." :amv:

This is totally my thread!

I haven't read this past the first page, so I'll try to be succinct in case this has been said.

To me as an artist, when viewing other people's art, I think it better be very obvious why you chose the media you chose. The idea of 'the concept video' would hold a HELL of a lot more weight to me if they all didn't use bullshit electronica, and all weren't gratuitous excersizes in "synch every blip or die trying" style. Its such a one sided experience.

Is it pretty? Yes

Is it interesting? Yes

Does it keep you watching? Yes

Are you emotionaly engaged? No

Is your reptilian brain being stimulated at the expense of your mamilian brain? Yes

Theres nothing inherently wrong with using anime as purely a medium for your own piece of abstract video art. But if your visuals don't relate at all to your sound, or your concept, you are firmly in Andy Warhol territory and are just jerking off for your own amusement. Your not saying anything.

This is one of those things were I should just record a rant and post the mp3. In fact I think I'll do that!

Awesome.

To come full circle, I'll make a cheesy techno remix of your MP3, and then we can use it in a video which is a "gratuitous excersize in 'synch every blip or die trying'".

I think this is how the vids classify:

BTB & True Fiction - Both vids contain a large scale of effects, but both are done in the spirit of the anime they use. BTB documenting the moves and characters of Bleach, and True Fiction capturing the animosity and conflict of the anime characters involved. Thus they are made in the spirit of AMVs since they have relevance to their source & audience, they sync beats/cuts/effects with consideration to the anime footage and the song, and also the effects are used to better present the anime.

Silencio & Vertigo: Both vids contain artistic effects and visualizations. However, the anime sources used are not presented in the spirit of the original show or in anime itself. Instead the footage is manipulated to act as visual metaphors and stylized visualizations. This meaning that whatever relevant points the anime source holds, (i.e. characters, story, audience familiarity), has absolutely no bearing on the meaning of the video. The footage could be interchanged with any similar source to attain the same effect, but was chosen only due to it's aesthetic nature. In short, the videos only use the anime as an effect to suit the concept regardless of any ties to the actual show, in actuality many of these types of video could be done with other sources, custom animation, or even live action and still hold the same exact meaning.

Don't get me wrong, I like both styles of vids personally, although I watch and analyze each type very differently. I'm just pointing out what vids I think Koop is trying to single out.
