There is a lot of talk about anti-piracy tools being used on the new video sharing sites. But there's also talk about not using these tools to just get rid of all copyrighted content. Some are suggesting that copyright owners could choose to either take down copyrighted content or force it to advertise and basically put it to work for them. I'm guessing this decision will probably be influenced by popularity, how unavoidable it is that it will be distributed somewhere else if it is shut down, and relationships between copyright owners and video distributing sites.

I think the ideal outcome is that AMVs will come to be seen as promotional tools just like regular music videos or trailers. Although I'm sure copyright owners will have issues with the lack of control they have in the process. But who knows, maybe they'll start paying us to make these things?

For the other side of the question, I personally want to be a professional filmmaker. I also happen to love AMVs. It'd be nice if AMVs helped me out somehow, but at the very least I know they'll help my editing/planning/effects skills and that's good enough for me. I don't see myself outgrowing the hobby (certainly not the appreciation side of it), but I'm sure my participation level will fluctuate. I hope the anime audience continues to broaden and mature in a similar way to (or at least a shadow of) the growth of video gaming. However, I think anime may get eclipsed by 3d animation in the years to come. Unless we're considering 3d animation anime as well. In which case, things will just change. If 3d replaces 2d as the anime norm, I'm not sure Japan will be able to maintain its strong position in respect to the United States (and possibly China over the next decade). Although I'm beginning to get too far into widening issues. Good luck AMVs.

I have low self esteem when it comes to my mortality, so I kinda think I'll probably be dead by 35 (that's the max age...I don't see myself any older than that =/) We'll see.
But yeah, I'll make a dozen shitty AMVs, then one 'good' (self-labelled one) video, then I'll start claiming AMVs was lost, so I brought it back =P

There have been editors who were paid to make an Anime Music Video in the past. "On Your Mark" and "Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem."
Although, considering these two films as AMVs is up for debate and personal interpretation, because the term Anime Music Video often refers to a fan-made product. The two films also consisted of original animation. But nether the less, they were still anime videos put to music.

I guess the question I have for the majority is: Are AMV's going to be more than a fan-made product in the future?
Keep in mind that I do realize that many people will still be doing it for fun.

No. Absolutly no.

I don´t think that this will ever be commercial. Look at those shitty anime trailers you have on your dvds! Do you think this will ever change? I doubt it! At least there won´t be enough stuff to do to make it more public.

Well maybe someone makes stuff with his own animated drawings. Who knows? But it won´t be nothing more than fan-made products for sure.

Just take a look around! There are bands and companies that already make contests that you make them trailers for theire products. Ozzy Osbourne started a contest and made some greenscreen video footage public avaible. One of his latest music videos (maybe his newest. I don´t know) IS fanmade.
Also a really popular german band (Die Fantastischen 4) made such a contest too in the last months.

Absolutely agree with this.
I think the only way to "sell" amv's or related products is joining a advertisement company or something similar.
Anyway, i think the question is if someone will make the editing his way of life, beyond than beying a simple hobby. So let me tell you that in my case, im going to study a career of Animation/Postproduction/Cinema Realization for 3 years in March of 2008.
When i finish the career, the school will send me to one of the 7 companys that they have in contract for 2 months, during that time i'll be proobed.

I think i'll enjoy very much.

As for the AMV community at large, I don't really think too much about where it's going. I just enjoy the ride. Me, personally, well... it might be nice to win a competition instead of constantly coming in second place.
