I'd rather have a video with 10k opinions rating average of 6-7 rather than all 10s...
Why would you want to have 10 thousand people tell you that your video is "meh" at best?

I'de rather a single renowned (person with a certain level of expertise and wisdow) tell me I did good than 10k people I did bad.

One gets better through criticism... If a noob gets only one op telling him his vid sux, what's the chances of him improving if it's an op that's 2 sentences in length? If nobody helps the guy out, he's almost doomed. [why help someone whose vids suck?] If he recieves TONS of info stating what needs fixing, his vids on the whole will get better should he listen.

I was starting out quite weak and in fact asked politely my favorite video editors to opinionate my first 4 vids or so. ErMaC and icechai being two of them...

If a noob makes bad videos, nobody ops them cause they don't like it, then blammo, nooob makes nooooooo progress...

But, since I'd like to safely assume my vids no longer stink [a large majority of them being in the dance category top 10%], I think it's a valid assumption to follow. Noobs stay noobs until help comes along [op exchanges help]

Not saying it isn't possible, but it always helpful if someone breaksdown your video and helps you out because in your eyes you may not catch something. It is always good to have another set of eyes to help you out.

As did I. (Not sayin' I'm great, just saying I'm better than I used to be). My first opinion EVER instructed me to promptly kill myself. I wouldn't say that was constructive, or in any way helped me make better videos.

You can't really rely on others to help you improve. There's simply too many members, and a n00b can easily get lost in the current if they don't help themselves.

Although, one could aguably say that your videos would have remained a similar level of quality.....

I disagree. I think that, if you can find someone that is willing and able to give constructive advice it's a benefit. I guess it's like tutorials. Some people are able to just pick up a program and figure it out, but others need some guides. Even with guides, some people find that if they get 'just a little' help, it's enough.

However, the noobish that simply relies on someone to solve all of their problems ie: begging for help for things that can be found simply by clickin g on the help function in their program isn't likely to do well regardless of how much assistance they get.

To answer the original question: getting in the top 10% means making a standout video. On top of that, no matter how good the video is, people need to like it and say so. Look at the videos at the top of the top 10%. Look how many ops they have. Sure some of them might be getting inflated scores *cough*naruto*cough* but the point is that lots of people found it standout from the norm, either in terms of quality, or just the entire package. If you look at the top, they are all well put together peices, and all of them appear to have tons of effort thrown into them.

I'm the producer, and if you wanna make it in this town, you gotta suck my dick until all the lipstick rubs off and I look like the Kool Aid Man's daddy.

1. Your vid isn't gonna pop shit unless it has a really good song. Choral mixed with techno beats making it sound like an overhyped Hollywood trailer is a fan favorite. (ex: MITTERNACHT, ETERNAL DAMNATION).

2. Use every anime possible! No one will notice that you can't match scenes up in the anime with the lyrics if you jam everything together from different sources, even if they all look nothing alike and conflict with each other! (ex: BLEED THE SKY, SCATMAN).

3. Put LOTS of effects in there, regardless of how shitty they look and cover up the work you're trying to portray. (ex: TOO MANY TO NAME, BUT I'M LOOKING IN YOUR DIRECTION, DECOYOPS).

4. Do something ORIGINAL. This only tends to work half the time, and isn't a very reliable technique, so I don't really recommend it.

Enter your vid into a popular con and win an award, that's how I did it (The Hawk's Talon: Judea).

But if you care about the top 10%, then you're focused on all the wrong things.
The best effects are the ones you don't notice.
