I think most of the skill is experience which you get threw deep analysis of what you've seen. As a lot of people already said: Finding out why you like something and why not is a great start.

Effectwise: Well... tutorials like Video Copilot give you an idea how to improve and what is actually possible with your programs. However there is nothing cheaper than a Video Copilot-copycat video.

This however, doesn't make your amvs any better :)
You don't need to make good amvs to be part of the in-crowd. Hang out with good editors, and your videos become good by association. Trust me, it works.
part 2 of the equation that everybody's ignoring lol. yeah if the 'in-crowd' happens to make a lot of the videos you like, just like learning what elements you like from their amvs, spend some time with them and leach off of their experience. You can even come off as a bit of a tool ( :ying: just don't piss them all off) but the association really teaches you more than you might think.

It's like your mother warning you about not falling into the wrong crowd. Not just because of what they might make you do, but because of what it might put into your head.

BUT truthfully I've found I don't really like many of the videos from the in crowd lol... so I leave my associations with them to a low ebb :). But I do suggest it once or twice. It's like a buddha doll, rub it's butt for good luck! That's how it works right lol.

1) make amvs
2) watch amvs
3) make amvs
4) associate with the community
5) repeat all steps you get better as you go
If you do not think so... you will DIE

I second watching - and not just the good stuff, but everything. Watch until the amazement wears off and you can critically analyze what makes a video work and emulate the parts that work the best.

Also take your time. Sure, once you hit a certain skill level it can become trivial to pump out a vid in a day, but you're not there yet. Your footage prep time (assuming you're doing a fair amount of ripping and filtering) shouldn't be the thing that takes the longest number of hours.

It's important to know where you're stuck too... do you not understand basic concept and theory? If you understand why you need to have a framework (story, narritive, cohesive element, whateveryouwanttocallit) and why you need to sync (beat, lyric, mood, yougettheidea), then getting to the doing it part is all practice, emulation of what you watch, and trying shit out to see what works.

Beta it. Beta it again. Feel ashamed if you're betaing it all the time and not improving because you're wasting people's time. Then release when you put the damn work into it that you personally need to make something half-way decent.
